In the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division IV playoffs, the West Ranch Wildcats boys soccer team ran into an offensive buzz saw.

The Wildcats gave up three first-half goals in a 5-1 loss to the Hawthorne Cougars on Thursday at Hawthorne High.

“These were not lucky goals, they were well-made goals,” said West Ranch head coach Fausto Arana of Hawthorne. “They were set up really well.”

The Cougars (18-2-3) sprinted to a 2-0 lead within the first 10 minutes of the game.

West Ranch (8-10-3) answered back with a goal from Zack Sage in the 25th minute to cut the lead to 2-1, but it was short lived.

Hawthorne found the back of the net again for a 3-1 halftime lead.

The Wildcats struggled to deal with Hawthorne’s aggressive, physical style of play.

“Skill-wise, they’re good,” Arana said. “But they also bring physicality as well.”

West Ranch was coming off a 2-1 win over Bishop Montgomery on Tuesday in a wild-card game.

Thursday marked the end of the high school careers of 13 Wildcats seniors.

It’s also the end of Arana’s first season at the helm.

“I think given the circumstances, the fact that they had to learn a new coach, which is always hard, I think I’m happy with the way we did things,” Arana said. “The boys adapted really quick.”
