At least 24 schools are already committed to participate in Canyon High School’s Santa Clarita Valley Track Invitational.

Five Foothill League teams and many other schools from around Southern California will participated in the fundraising event at Canyon High on March 1.

This will mark the season opener for all teams involved because March 1 is the first legal day of competition for spring sports.

The first Foothill League meets of the season take place March 27.

As for the the SCV Invitational, it will feature a full slate of track and field events, including sprints, distance races, hurdles and all standard field events.

There will also be an array of different types of relay races with sprint medleys, distance medleys, 4x1,600-meters and 4x800.

“It’s kind of a fun way for kids to run without any real pressure,” said Canyon track and field head coach and event organizer Paul Broneer. “They’re just kind of running for their team.”

Local schools participating will be Canyon, Golden Valley, Hart, Saugus and West Ranch.

Out-of-town schools are coming from Burbank, Bakersfield, Ridgecrest and various parts of the San Fernando Valley, Antelope Valley and Ventura County.

Broneer said he expects around 2,000 total athletes to show up.

Athletes will be separated into varsity boys, varsity girls and frosh/soph boys.

The meet starts at 10 a.m. and is scheduled to end around 3:30 p.m.

Canyon is still seeking additional sponsors for the event.
