There are some who take labels personally.

It appears the West Ranch girls basketball team is one of the some.

The Wildcats continued their climb in the Foothill League with a 59-51 win on Friday at Hart High.

It’s becoming apparent that West Ranch (13-10 overall, 3-3 Foothill League) is much more than standout senior guard Whitney Branham.

“That gives a team something to be frustrated about,” said West Ranch head coach Allison Moore. “No one likes being called a ‘one-girl team.’”

Yes, Branham had her usual stellar game, scoring 27 points in the contest.

But the Wildcats were much more.

Meilani Calderon scored 14 points, Jasmine Hayes scored nine points and pulled down eight rebounds and Izzy Singer added eight points.

But Hart (11-11, 3-3) made things interesting.

The Wildcats had a 10-point lead at 53-43 midway through the fourth quarter.

But the Indians turned up the defense, which led to a flurry of offense.

A Breze Kimble steal led to her layup, which cut the lead to 55-48.

Another steal led to a free throw make.

Then Hart’s Liz Sulaiman’s rebound and putback cut West Ranch’s lead to 55-51 with a minute to play.

Sulaiman led Hart with 10 points.

Then the closer showed up.

Branham got to the free throw line twice in the last minute and made all four of her free throws.
