As long as Paige Nealy and Sandra Ikeora were in the game, Valencia girls basketball was going to be just fine.

The pair of high-rising seniors were too much to handle as the Valencia Vikings beat the Golden Valley Grizzlies 67-41 on Friday at Golden Valley High.

“The two towers in progress,” said the 6-foot-tall Nealy. “Just working back-and-forth.”

That’s pretty much how it went for the Vikings (12-6 overall, 2-0 Foothill League) as Nealy dropped in 23 points and pulled down 13 rebounds and the 5-foot-11 Ikeora added 20 points, 14 boards and five blocks.

None of Golden Valley’s players were able to match up against the two.

“They were both really good tonight,” said Valencia head coach Jerry Mike. “We wanted them to get the majority of our shots.”

Valencia was equally as dominating on the defensive end, forcing 23 Golden Valley turnovers and limiting the Grizzlies to 17 first-half points and six in the second quarter.

Valencia led 34-17 at the break.

The Grizzlies put together a strong stretch of defensive basketball in the third quarter by extending their zone defense and forcing the Vikings to get the ball up the court quickly.

Caitlyn Zindroski scored 16 points to lead the Grizzlies and Mariah Madison added 14.

Eventually, Valencia settled down and got the ball back in the hands of the big seniors.

“It just went from working inside and trying to go inside-out,” Nealy said of the offense.
