Forward fasting

It's getting so that I dread opening up my home e-mail. That pleasant voice that used to announce my mail has begun to sound like a crier of doom: "YOUUUU'VE GOTTT MAILLL! That's because, after 12 hours or so of not checking, I know I'll have an ocean of e-mails waiting - and I can be sure that only about two of them will be something offering real communication that I am interested in. First ...

Review: 'I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change' opens at REP

It's a long title: "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change." And it sums up what I feel is the female point of view in most relationships. However, the play of the same title, currently running at the Repertory East Playhouse, is not so much about changing your partner as it is about the changes people, and relationships, go through as time passes. Oh, and did I mention it's funny? Freaking hilarious. The amazingly talented, ...

Review: 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum' at CTG

One thing I've learned is that you can't take comedy seriously. Sometimes it sneaks up on you in spite of your highbrow resistance, sometimes you have to abandon yourself to it. The latter is especially true when it comes to a farce, which "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" is. It's a classic farce, in fact, famous from stage and screen. That being said, and your guard down, the Canyon Theatre ...

Summer Meltdown VI: Rockin' with the fans and chillin' backstage

Another tremor rocked Southern California last Saturday. Centered deep inside Golden Valley High School in the Santa Clarita Valley, this tremor was not caused by traditional seismic mishaps, but by the loud, high-energy rock and hip-hop music of 13 bands and their hundreds of screaming fans at the 2009 Summer Meltdown festival. Unlike the '94 quake, this was one I was glad to experience. Covering the sixth annual "Summer Meltdown Autism Awareness and Social Inclusion ...

Shwayze and Cisco buzzin' with energy at Summer Meltdown

A crowd of screaming girls with outstretched hands grabbed at Shwayze's and his partner Cisco Adler's shirts as the rap-rockers leaned over the barrier in front of the stage into the audience of about 1,000 near the climax of the 6th annual Summer Meltdown concert Saturday night. A dozen bands rocked Golden Valley High School's outdoor amphitheater before Shwayze and Adler, but it was obvious the fun-loving pair were the real stars of the 10-hour ...

Two Women on Wine: Decoding the language of U.S. wine labels

We remember when selecting a wine sometimes came down to whether or not we liked the artwork on the label. Needless to say, we drank our share of wine that didn't have much more to offer than a pretty label.
