Last week I had the pleasure of re-experiencing "Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical" at the little El Centro Theatre in Hollywood.

This column was originally published in Escape on October 29, 2010. Navigating the world of wine can be intimating to the novice and, sometimes, even to the wine aficionado. We admit, deciphering wine labels when you're selecting wine can be confusing and frustrating.

This column originally ran in the Ventura County Star on April 21, 2012 My wife, Nancy, and I just celebrated 30 years of marriage. We had talked about where we wanted to go and our list included France, Italy and New Zealand. However, we both had never been to New York and we eventually made this our destination. While we wanted to visit the city, we also wanted to explore New York wines. Depending ...

"Thoroughly Modern Millie" opened at the Canyon Theatre Guild last Saturday night with both the title and feel of a classic that you've seen many times - except that maybe you haven't. Though the Academy Award-winning movie of that title, starring Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Channing, has been around since 1967, I'd never seen the much more recent, Tony Award-winning stage play (and, most likely, you haven't either). Thus, things weren't so ...
Dim lights cast a hazy grayness over the stage. Characters brood and discover. Hypnotic writing pulls the audience deeper until they feel as crazed as the actors on stage. Layers of meaning are peeled back one at a time as two lead actors peel off their clothes. The play climaxes to revelations as dark and complex as the actors' performances. Dr. Dysart's final words cling to your mind like questions you've been too afraid to ask.

From an exquisitely tender German evening song to a stormy Brazilian psalm, the Santa Clarita Master Chorale has everything you want in a summer concert this year. "Let Music Fill the Air" is the theme and the chorale will be presenting a whole program of songs about singing on Sunday, June 3 at 3:30 p.m. at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons.
There are countless times when customers tell us they don't want or like a wine that is too dry, preferring something sweet. Upon delving further into the customer's needs, we find that the classification of dry versus sweet wine offers some confusion among novices and wine lovers alike. As we continue to probe their preferences, we often discover what they're really looking for is a fruity wine, not necessarily a sweet, dessert-like wine.
Now, I don't know how the folks in the town of Starke might feel about it ... or the folks in Florida as a whole ... or folks who live in "trailer parks" across our great nation, for that matter. But I really don't care, because the audience at the REP's opening of "The Great American Trailer Park Musical," myself included, found the goings-on at the Armadillo Acres trailer park a real hoot.
This column originally ran in the Ventura County Star on Aug. 6, 2011 During the process of making our wine I found the physical part of winemaking very difficult and exhausting. And learning the chemistry part of winemaking proved very confusing. Going through the legal challenges of getting our ABC licenses, arranging a place to keep my wine and getting the necessary insurance also proved to be difficult and frustrating. One of the things I ...

Let's say you're in your favorite wine store looking for a bottle of wine to enjoy that evening. You know you like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, but this time you'd like to try something new and different. You think maybe you should try a Petite Sirah, but not sure you'll like it. You then consider a Grenache, having heard a lot about that particular grape, but uncertainty gets the better of you.
