The road is impassable, wiped out by a devastating flood. Studying her crumpled map and the terrain surrounding her, achieving the mission seems hopeless. She traverses a stream, hopping from rock to rock until finally reaching her destination. With rescue package in hand, she leaps upon the wall and calls to the recipient.
On this Memorial Day, when our thoughts turn to those who have served our country so well, and sacrificed so much, I would like to remind everyone that there is a very special place, right here in town, dedicated to the memory of our veterans. It's a place of peace and beauty, where you can pause and reflect - where you can stop down from your busy life and remember those who gave years of their lives, or the rest of their lives, for us.

If you pass by the dining room at the SCV Senior Center on a Monday afternoon, you'll find yourself slowing down to listen as the sweet sounds of Hawaiian music drift through the door and you'll swear you hear the ocean and smell the tropical flowers. Don't be a humu-humu nuku-nuku a pua'a and go swimming by. Stop in and see the fun as the members of the Beginning Polynesian Dance class swirl their hips ...
Today, May 12, has been named National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day by the National Fibromyalgia Association. And while many folks might yawn and wonder what day isn't some national something-or-other day, this day is significant to the estimated 10 million Americans who are affected by this disorder. Not coincidentally, the SCV Senior Center and the SCV Fibromyalgia Suppport Group hosted Fibro Faire, the second annual fibromyalgia awareness day, on Saturday, May 3 - to spread the ...
At 6:30 a.m., when most people are snug in their beds asleep, Bob Osborne and Diane Jones are hard at work, manning the assembly line. For several hours they slice, dice, scoop, dump, scrape, transfer and bag. No, they don't work in a factory or sweatshop - they are among the 50-odd SCV Senior Center volunteers who willingly donate their time to put together more than 400 meals a day for housebound seniors all over the Santa Clarita Valley.
Though computers can open up a world of possibilities in terms of education, shopping and social life, learning how to use one can be daunting. If you're older and didn't grow up in the "computer age,"
Sara Thomas perches elegantly on a stool in her living room as she talks about her life. Her soft voice trills through her airy apartment as the afternoon light accents her high cheekbones. Her slender arms are gracefully folded over her lap like a sphinx.
Every Thursday at 2 p.m., rooms A1 and A2 of the SCV Senior Center are overflowing with happy people. They sit attentively in rows, mesmerized by the words of Dr. Michael Holt. Well, they're not literally mesmerized, but they are clearly happy.
For more than 40 years, Saugus resident Hjordis Bakke has watched the Santa Clarita Valley grow up. In fact, you could almost say she's raised it. In those years, she's raised her own children, of course, but also provided licensed, in-home childcare to successive generations of other children. In fact, at times, she has cared for the children of folks she cared for when they were young.
Jim Pontius may be grounded in Friendly Valley Village nowadays, but for years he had a bird's eye view into deep space - and boy does he have some stories to tell.
Driving can be treacherous under the best of circumstances, but as we age it can become even more so, as our senses decline and our reaction times slow down.
Jim Ozasky would like to remind local seniors - and anyone else - that, to receive your tax rebate from the economic stimulus plan, you must file a 2007 federal income tax return. Even for people who don't usually need to file, this can mean an extra $300 coming in. For those who normally need to file, it can be significantly more.
As men and women enter their golden years, many decide they can no longer maintain their homes and choose to downgrade to something smaller, be it an apartment or a condominium.
Do you dream of the day you can retire, but aren't sure how to get there? You're not alone.
