Easter brunch for the bunch

Whether you get to sleep in on Easter Sunday or finish up at church with a growling stomach, going out for brunch on the day is a tradition that most of us happily follow. Around town several restaurants are offering special menus and activities during the brunch hours this Sunday. The "Easter" brunches at other restaurants actually happen every Sunday, but who cares? It only means you'll be spilling your usual maple syrup on your Easter slacks.

It’s Oscar time: Roger Ebert's preview and picks

I can't remember a year when it seemed easier to predict the Oscars. Those words may come back to haunt me, but there you have it. Of the top eight categories, seven look like sure things. The only dicey one is best picture, and although "Avatar" may roll in on its record-breaking profits, I think it's a win for "The Hurt Locker."

With some gorgeous days appearing between storms, now may be the perfect time to set boots to the trails in our local hills and valleys. It may not be true spring yet, but hiking season has begun!

Olympic Winter Games are flying in

Ski Jumping, Ice Dancing, Slalom, Downhill, Biathlon, Hockey and Curling, Curling, Curling, the 2010 Winter Olympic Games will offer 17 days of drama and thrills on the slippery stuff in Vancouver - and NBC's coverage will show you quite a bit of it. Sadly, Curling does not appear on the broadcast schedule. But maybe there will be an "international incident" on the Curling ice that will draw the news cameras there.

Riding the rails in SoCal

Years ago Amtrak used the advertising catch-phrase, "there's something about a train" to entice riders aboard. Trains were seen as quaint, nostalgic relics of the past - the freedom of the automobile and the speed of the airplane had nearly doomed passenger trains to extinction.
