I think I know how they felt at Pompeii. Just Wednesday afternoon, as I came out of our air conditioned offices, I was met by threatening brown-gray skies, oppressive heat, and air you could hardly breathe for the smoke. And there was a fine snow of ash falling, collecting in the nooks and crannies of my truck.
So, yeah, it's blistering hot and the sky is filled with smoke. But think ahead my friends. Things may be so very different this winter.
My dad built a study desk in my bedroom for me when I was about 10. I'm sure he was quite proud, but he basically built it in the closet. So I had to pull my chair up to the closet and stick my head in to study. Oh, there was a light and all - but it was a bit like studying in a coffin. So I avoided studying.
The phone rings at 8 p.m. on a Sunday, and it's George, the guy that lives next to your father. "I hate to tell you this, but your dad fell down again," George says. "I found him on the floor of his garage about an hour ago. He's a little scuffed up and confused, but seems OK." And then George goes on to say what you already know. "I know it's none of my business ... but ... I don't think your dad should live by himself anymore."
Hello Mr. Lamoureux,
For many of us the word "garage" has become synonymous with the word "storage." Tools, boxes, bed frames, unused furniture, hazardous waste and junk, junk, junk fill every square foot from floor to rafters. Maybe you have a pathway winding through, or maybe your HOA requires you to keep a space open for a car. If the latter is true, you probably have to climb in and out through the trunk because there is no room to open the doors.
So you say money is tight, my friend? Well, don't feel alone in that.
Dear Mr. Lamoureux,
Americans spend at least 90 percent of their time indoors, where air can be two to five times more polluted than outside, according to Travis Richardson, general manager of GW Richardson Heating and Air Conditioning in Valencia.
Being eco-friendly isn't just limited to the car you drive or the appliances you buy, and it doesn't have to mean sacrificing convenience, quality or budget.
