Weiss wins Carmen Sarro Award

Stephanie Weiss, a long time resident of the Santa Clarita Valley with a history of volunteerism that dates to 1971, was named the winner of the Carmen Sarro Community Service Award by the Zonta Club of SCV. More than 200 attendees saw Weiss named the winner of the award out of a field of 20 nominees. Weiss was greeted with a standing ovation and tears as she came forward to accept the award.

E.J. Stephens: Cinema history ‘lives on’ at Eternal Valley

From the earliest days of European exploration, the area that today is the Eternal Valley Cemetery in Newhall, has been a site rich with history. In 1769, an expedition sent out by Father Junipero Serra to find the Bay of Monterey, passed through the area. In 1847, American troops under the command of John C. Fremont reportedly camped at the site. A few years later, Sanford Lyon took over a stagecoach station that was on or near the property. A small cemetery was created at that time, which today is preserved in Eternal Valley as the Garden of the Pioneers.

A Foundation of friends

The Betty Ferguson Foundation will bring together fine wine, gourmet food and good friends when they host their eighth annual Vine 2 Wine event at the Bridgeport Lake Clubhouse from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 5. All proceeds will benefit the foundation's programs for women and youth.

Castaic resident Brittany Pawlak will be a contestant Monday, 10 a.m. on "The Price is Right." The show airs locally on KCBS (Channel 2). Residents of the Santa Clarita Valley are being sought to watch a taping of the show and try their luck at being chosen as a contestant, tickets are free. Albert White, son of richard and Irma White, is a 2006 graduate of Bowman High School in Santa Clarita. He enlisted in the Marines in 2007 and is being deployed to Iraq. He is 20 years old and loves the Lakers basketball team. His family reports he is a great son and a friend to many in the Santa Clarita Valley.
