Zonta's Harte of the Matter

Canyon Country veterinarian was friend to pets

Juan Bonavera, DVM, of Canyon Country Animal Hospital, died unexpectedly at his home last weekend. He was a veterinarian who cared deeply for his patients and was a hero to many in the Santa Clarita Valley.

50th Anniversary

Fred and Mary Jo Haendle of Newhall are celebrating 50 years of marriage. The grand celebration was held in July when all of their children, grandchildren, as well as many friends and other family joined them on a cruise in the Mexican Riviera. The couple were married in Granada Hills on Nov. 16, 1958.

A pair of aces trumps a tragedy

The crowded parking lot at the Hyatt Valencia told much of the story. There one could spot a brand new Porsche Turbo, many Lexus sedans, a Rolls Royce and a Ferrari parked next to several "soccer mom" vans; a "Surf Baby" license plate on a Toyota Corolla and many cars bearing Valencia Dance Team stickers.

An 'Evening Under the Stars'

There were heroes to be found at the 15th annual Evening Under the Stars held Sept. 6 to benefit the Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children's Cancer. Heroes bald from chemotherapy, heroes who needed help walking and heroes demonstrating quiet bravery came forward to accept their Hoefflin "Shining Star" trophies.
