Fred and Mary Jo Haendle of Newhall are celebrating 50 years of marriage. The crowded parking lot at the Hyatt Valencia told much of the story. There were heroes to be found at the 15th annual Evening Under the Stars held Sept. 6 to benefit the Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children's Cancer. Heroes bald from chemotherapy, heroes who needed help walking and heroes demonstrating quiet bravery came forward to accept their Hoefflin "Shining Star" trophies.
In the heart of "old" Newhall, a stately home on a street shaded with towering, old trees harbors a surprising backyard secret. Rows and rows of grape vines - a private vineyard of Syrah and Grenache and Mouvedra grapes. Neighbors and family members Chris and Jeannie Carpenter and Tim Carpenter, partners in Compa Vineyard, invite residents of the Santa Clarita Valley to "Sunset in the Vineyard" from 3 to 6 p.m. Nov. 16. Tickets are $50 in advance and $60 at the door.
