Burning car ignites grass fire

A burning Volvo ignited a five-acre grass fire along Interstate 5 north of Lake Hughes Road at 11:23 a.m. Thursday morning, forcing closure of two southbound lanes and snarling traffic for nearly 90 minutes.

UPDATED: Sheriff’s Dept. hosts Saturday chili cook-off

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department will host its annual "Fun in the Sun Chili Cook-off" Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Jack Bones Equestrian Center in Castaic, giving chili lovers a chance to sample dozens of different chili recipes and raise money for two local charities.

L.A. County signs contract with new trash hauler

Stevenson Ranch and Castaic residents will have a new trash hauler beginning in November. Burrtec Waste Industries, Inc. will provide services to 15,000 customers in the Santa Clarita Valley's unincorporated areas starting on Nov. 1. The company will be under contract with Los Angeles County.
