Station Fire still threatens Mount Wilson

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A giant amphibious air tanker has made a huge water drop on flames on Mount Wilson northeast of Los Angeles.

The flying boat bombarded the peak Tuesday to extinguish flames from a sprawling wildfire that could endanger the historic Mount Wilson Observatory and adjacent TV, radio and cell phone towers serving the region.

Acton residents flee to Red Cross center

It was 3 a.m. Sunday when firefighters showed up at the Soledad Canyon KOA campground to give the order: Evacuate.

James Whitmer, who lives and works at the park, packed everything he could fit into two suitcases, grabbed his dog and plenty of dog food, and hauled it all to a Red Cross disaster center set up at Golden Valley High School.

Station Fire update: 2 Acton homes burn

The swath of destruction caused by the Station Fire widened to more than 164 square miles Monday, destroying two Acton homes before moving north toward the Antelope Valley.

"We watched a wall of flames about 3 miles wide burn through three canyons in 10 minutes," said David Stewart, 53, of Acton, who had a front-row seat for Sunday night's havoc. "All I could hear was this big roar of the fire and things exploding."

SCV Sheriff's team saves suicidal man from jumping off cliff

On Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at approximately 10:05am deputies assigned to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station received a call for service regarding a 42-year-old male who was possibly suicidal. A short time later, the man's vehicle was located (parked) at Sierra Highway and Newhall Avenue. Deputies had reason to believe the man was now traveling on foot headed into an off road / rural area to possibly commit suicide.
