Another Hart employee put on administrative leave
For the second time in less than a month, an employee with the William S. Hart Union High School District has been put on administrative leave for alleged inappropriate contact with a student. In a news release issued by district spokeswoman Pat Willett, the district says it is "currently investigating allegations of inappropriate contact between an employee and a student. The staff member has been placed on administrative leave pending results of the investigation."
Hart district to lease portable buildings
Despite having around 56 extra portables of its own, most of which are stored on lots near the district office, the Hart district will shell out nearly $400,000 to lease 26 portable buildings for the modernization of Hart High School and Placerita and Sierra Vista junior highs. A school in her honor
When a drought dried up the well at pioneer Sulphur Springs School in Sand Canyon in 1931, Leona Cox came to the aid of students by hauling five-gallon cans of water to the school in her Overland touring car. At the time, Sulphur Springs School consisted of one room and had one teacher, Florence Mitchell. Cox also helped out by keeping the fires going in the winter months, caring for the grounds, and helping to discipline the boys and girls.

County seeks help at polls
An additional 11,300 pollworkers are needed to staff polling places for the California Primary Election on June 3, acting county Registrar-Recorder and Clerk Dean Logan said over the weekend. "Pollworkers are an essential part of a successful election day," he said. "We have recruited over 18,000 pollworkers, but with the election less than one month away we are still in need of over 11,000 pollworkers."

Neighbors rally against project
Around 100 concerned Newhall residents gathered at a neighborhood meeting to voice their opposition to The Avenue at Santa Clarita, a 37-acre proposed residential and commercial center at the old Smiser Ranch mule farm, near Interstate 5, Wiley Canyon Road and Calgrove Boulevard. Plans for The Avenue at Santa Clarita were submitted by Monteverde Companies in November. Currently, the project would include 800 residencies, retail space and a 300-room hotel with conference center.
Juvenile arrested for alleged thefts
A 17-year-old from Canyon Country was arrested Friday night after deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station found what they believed were two stolen laptop computers in the juvenile's bedroom. Lt. Tom Bryski of the SCV Sheriff's Station said Friday around 9:45 p.m., local deputies visited the home of a juvenile on probation. Man arrested for allegedly stealing metal in Newhall
Jonathan Feenny of Reseda was arrested Saturday in connection with the theft of metal pieces from a Newhall metal yard, according to a sheriff's official. Lt. Tom Bryski of the SCV Sheriff's Station said around 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feenny, 45, allegedly stole metal pieces from a business near The Old Road and Weldon Canyon Road in Newhall. After loading his truck with the goods, the man drove to a San Fernando Valley recycling shop to collect money for the pieces.
