FBI releases crime stats

In spite of an uptick in robberies, Santa Clarita has seen fewer crimes overall compared to most similarly sized Southern California cities, according to FBI crime statistics released this week.

The swimming pool of Dennis Ferrigno, of Newhall, proved an enticing but dangerous lure Wednesday when a mother duck and her ducklings decided to take a dip there. After leading her babies into the water, the mother discovered they couldn't get out of the pool.

UPDATED: Debris confirms crash of Air France jet in Atlantic

FERNANDO DE NORONHA, Brazil (AP) -- An airplane seat, a fuel slick and pieces of white debris scattered over three miles of open ocean marked the site in the mid-Atlantic on Tuesday where Air France Flight 447 plunged to its doom, Brazil's defense minister said.

Brazilian military pilots spotted the wreckage, sad reminders bobbing on waves, in the ocean 400 miles (640 kilometers) northeast of these islands off Brazil's coast. The plane carrying 228 people vanished Sunday about four hours into its flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.
