Inmates graduate from program

More than 75 inmates at a Castaic jail got something they may not have expected when they were incarcerated. They got a graduation ceremony.

The MERIT program, from which the men were graduated Thursday, does more than help convicted domestic abuse and drug offenders, according to one of the program's teachers. It turns boys into men, he said.

From critical injury to medical career

When Eric Hisey turns on his ambulance's lights and siren to respond to an accident or injury, he knows firsthand how his patients feel entrusting their lives and well-being to emergency care.

Hisey, 22, of Newhall, began working for American Medical Response in Santa Clarita as an emergency medical technician after recovering from a critical neck injury he suffered in 2006.

Local dancer blends styles

Since the age of 5, Cristina Romero always has had a love of dance. Now 16, she is dancing as a member of the Grandeza Mexicana, a professional dance company based in Los Angeles. She started dancing as a member of the city of Santa Clarita's Ballet Folklorico at the Newhall Community Center.
