Kellar draws a crowd

In the hours leading up to Tuesday night's Santa Clarita City Council meeting, the outside of City Hall was turned into an emotional powder keg as Minutemen groups and immigrant support groups clashed - a culmination after more than a week's worth of controversy over Councilman Bob Kellar's comments at an anti-illegal immigration rally.

Speaker to talk about burnout

The Huckleberry Center for Creative Learning will host a talk by Tammy Takahashi from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 at Barnes & Noble in Valencia. She will discuss how the Santa Clarita Valley's homeschooling community can understand and deal with burnout. Coffee and refreshments will be provided. COC Theater Dept. hosts spring auditions

The College of the Canyons Theater Department will hold open auditions for students and community members interested in participating in the department's theatrical productions of "Delightful Disorientation: An Evening Of David Ives" directed by department chair and producer Paul Wickline; William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" directed by Stephen Whelan; and featured selections from the college's annual New Works Festival directed by David Stears. More than 50 roles are available for actors ages 15 to 60.

Saugus Union board votes to close 2 schools

Despite pleas from the community, the Saugus Union School District board late Tuesday voted to shut down Bouquet Canyon Elementary School and temporarily close Emblem Elementary School at the end of the school year.

Solicitors not endorsed by COC

College of the Canyons officials have received reports from Saugus residents that solicitors, representing themselves as COC students, have been going door-to-door in Santa Clarita Valley neighborhoods allegedly selling magazine subscriptions or ads for Los Angeles newspapers.

Students host Haiti fundraiser

Saugus board member announces plans to resign

Saugus Union School District Board of Education Member Douglas (Doug) Bryce has announced that he will be resigning his position as a Board Member. Mr. Bryce has accepted a new job in the San Diego area and will be relocating to the San Diego area. In his new position, he will be working from home in Santa Clarita until he is able to sell his home in order to relocate to San Diego, at which point he will submit his official resignation from his Board of Trustees position.
