UPDATED: Fans jam Town Center for Amgen Stage 7 start

The official countdown at noon today signaled the beginning of the 88.9-mile Stage 7 of the eight-stage 2009 Amgen Tour of California cycle race, as cheering spectators undeterred by overcast skies and a cool temperature lined Town Center Drive three to five people deep from the mall entrance west to McBean Parkway.

Life and times of James Dean presentation

The Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society will present The Life and Death of James Dean: Tracing His Last Day at 2 p.m., Feb. 28 at the Saugus Train Station at Heritage Junction, 24101 Newhall Avenue. The presentation will host a panel discussion with Chris Epting, author of "James Died Here," Tony Newhall, former publisher of The Signal Newspaper, and Warren Beath, author of "The Death of James Dean." Arts Advisory Committee to meet

'Kite Runner' essay contest

Students who attend the Literature to Life presentation of "The Kite Runner" Sunday at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at the College of the Canyons will be eligible to enter an essay contest by comparing the performance with the novel. The prizes are $250, $150 and $100 for first, second and third place, respectively. Entries must be submitted by Mar. 13 to the students' English teachers. COC hosts Sam Francis exhibit

The College of Canyons Art Gallery will host the work of Sam Francis from Feb. 17 to March 14. Organizers will host a reception from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. today that will include a slide presentation and lecture by Debra Burchett-Lere, Director of the Samuel L. Francis Foundation, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Francis also is known for his use of primary colors, and was influenced by Japanese brush painting, as well as Zen Buddhism. Aside from his splatter-and-splashes style, Francis also painted enormous and powerful paintings.
