Meadows students dominate in philosophy slam

The youngsters at Meadows Elementary School in Valencia are on top of their game when it comes to understanding global warming.

Ten-year-old Hunter Shapiro-Throckmorton was given the title of "The Most Philosophical Fourth Grader in America" and 10-year-old Camryn Patterson was named "The Most Artistic Student in America" after submitting their award-winning entries to the 2008 Kids Philosophy Slam.

Local water officials discuss drought crisis tonight

Local water officials are expected to hear tonight about the state's "impending water crisis" and about implications of the governor's recent declaration of a drought, from the lobbyists they pay to stay close to politicians in Sacramento.

Lobbyists Ralph F. Simoni and Dennis K. Albiani of California Advocates, Inc., are expected to debrief members of the Castaic Lake Water Agency's Government Relations and Outreach Committee tonight via conference call on the implications of the governor possibly declaring an emergency.

The motorcyclist who died on Soledad Canyon Road in Agua Dulce was identified as Palmdale resident Dan Bullard, 55, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Two Palmdale men killed in car crash

Two Palmdale men were killed after their vehicle spun out of control near Acton on Sunday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol. A third Palmdale man was seriously injured.

Bikers bar-hop for Hunger Defense Fund

Anyone in Canyon Country hoping to take advantage of the first lazy Sunday of summer and sleep in probably had a rude awakening when nearly 60 motorcylists revved their engines and rumbled down Soledad Canyon Road shortly after 10 a.m.

Thankfully, those motorcyclists were among Santa Clarita Valley's philanthropists, as they bar-hopped throughout the SCV to benefit the Santa Clarita Hunger Defense Fund as part of the 4th Annual Renegade Classics Summer Kick Off Poker Run.

Hybrid vehicles on display at Whole Foods

Lost in the outcry of rising gasoline prices in the Santa Clarita Valley and around the world is the amount of emissions and waste emanating from our vehicles. Automobile-makers are trying to do their part in building vehicles that are cleaner and more fuel efficient.

Many auto manufacturers are building electric or hydrogen cell vehicles that are consistent with California's stringent rules on engine emissions. However, a few auto manufacturers have developed a technology known as Partial Zero Emission Vehicles, which only emit 10 percent emissions from their engines.

Continuing a cultural tradition

For more than 10 months, the children of the Joga family have been dedicating countless hours to rehearsing and preparing their Lithuanian Folk Dance.

But the weekly trips to St. Casimir's in Los Angeles for their practice sessions will soon come to an end as the Saugus teens prepare to debut their skills at the 13th Lithuanian Folk Dance Festival, set to take place in Los Angeles at the beginning of July.

Motorcycle rider dies in solo crash

A solo motorcycle crash proved fatal Sunday morning, claiming the life of a 55-year-old motorcyclist driving northbound on Soledad Canyon Road near Agua Dulce, according to Officer Kevin Pack of the California Highway Patrol.

Shortly after 10:45 a.m., the motorcyclist, whose name was not yet released by authorities, drove along Soledad Canyon Road when he apparently lost control at an embankment and veered off the road, according to Pack.

High school, district named after film star William S. Hart

According to the school history on the Hart High School Web site, actor and director William S. Hart was very touched by the board of education naming both the school district and the first school after him - despite the fact that he had suggested the school be named after Civil War General John Fremont.

The district was actually originally given the title "Santa Clarita High School District," but the name was soon changed to honor Hart, local Western film star and community benefactor.
