Hart district ROP student wins two dental scholarships

This has been a good month for Melissa Rodriguez, a junior at Golden Valley High School who is enrolled in a dental assisting program through the William S. Hart Union High School District's Regional Occupational Program. Melissa received word that she will receive a $500 scholarship from the San Fernando Valley Dental Society, and a week later her table clinic at the California Dental Association Spring Scientific Session earned her yet another $250 scholarship and a $100 cash prize.

Power failure strikes Newhall

Nearly 24,000 homes and businesses near downtown Newhall suffered through a power outage when a substation failed just after 12 noon on Sunday, according to Southern California Edison. The affected area also included portions of the Summit in Valencia, Circle J Ranch and Stevenson Ranch.

Boy nearly drowns

A 2-year-old boy is being treated for injuries after he fell and nearly drowned in a pool at his Saugus home on Sunday afternoon. Valencia High hosts EcoFest
