Knights host benefit golf tourney to benefit firefighters

The Santa Clarita Assembly of the Knights of Columbus will host its fifth annual golf tournament in memory of Jack Dunn Friday, April 24, at 12 p.m. to benefit the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.

Metrolink commuter fares could go up

Commuters who rely on Metrolink for transportation could soon be faced with an increase in fares.

The board that oversees Metrolink will vote on whether to strap riders with a 4.5-percent fare increase on Friday.

New school opening delayed

Saugus Union School District will delay the opening of West Creek Elementary School until at least July 2010 because of a projected low enrollment for the nearly completed school, district officials said Wednesday.

"For us to be fiscally responsible, we need to have a minimum amount of students in that area," said Judy Umeck, board president.

Church group to do cleanup

Hard work. Humanitarianism. Put those endeavors together and one can do a lot of good in this world. Such combined synergy is behind the Mormon Helping Hands project, which will be held Saturday in the Santa Clarita Valley and statewide as 20,000 Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints members volunteer to help spruce up their communities.

Schools to reduce layoffs

Eighty teachers from two SCV school districts got reprieves Wednesday.

The William S. Hart Union High School District is taking back 62 teacher-layoff notices while Saugus Union School District rescinded 18 teacher-layoff notices, school officials said Wednesday.
