McKeon visits Valencia vets

U.S. Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon visited a Valencia retirement community Monday afternoon to honor the nearly 40 veterans who live there. The Memorial Day ceremony took place in the grassy courtyard behind the Belcaro recreation center, the Grove House, with veterans seated in three rows and other residents and guests scattered around them at tables.

Mitchell Elementary named for 19th century pioneer

Thomas Finley Mitchell came to California from Texas, and in 1860 he became the first United States citizen to reside in Soledad Canyon, where he started a cattle ranch and also farmed and raised honey bees. The only occupants of the canyon prior to Mitchell's arrival had been Native Americans, grizzly bears, coyotes and jackrabbits.

Eternal Valley event honors troops

World War II veterans in uniforms that, amazingly, still fit and Vietnam veterans in leather jackets arriving astride Harley Davidson motorcycles gathered with other veterans and the people who wanted to thank them Monday at Eternal Valley Memorial Park in Newhall. Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar said it was the largest crowd he has seen at the annual Memorial Day event.

Boy hit by car in Canyon Country

A 14-year old boy was struck by a motorist Monday afternoon while riding his bike near the intersection of Sierra Highway and Sandy Drive in Canyon Country. According to Officer Robert Tomayo of the California Highway Patrol, the boy was on the sidewalk but then suddenly veered out into the street in front of an oncoming pickup truck, which was not able to stop in time to avoid hitting him.

City to appoint six to vacant positions

Planning Commission chairman Mike Berger said Friday that after serving for 10 years on the Planning Commission, he will not be serving another term when his seat expires in July. "I don't want to get stale. I want to walk away in my prime," he said.

Council trash vote Tuesday

Commercial and residential trash rates may go up nearly 4 percent in July if the City Council approves an amendment to the franchises for the two local trash haulers. With council approval, the companies would be able to raise their rates up to 3.95 percent for one year beginning July 1.

City sees slight dip in sales tax revenue

Amid an ailing economy, the city's sales tax revenue dipped .6 percent in the last three months of 2007 compared to the same time period in 2006, according to data released by the city on Friday. "This is a difficult time for many business sectors, for government and for the economy," city Treasurer Darren Hernandez said in a statement. "It is more important than ever to shop within the city of Santa Clarita and support our local businesses."

Whole Foods BBQ kicks off summer

It may have been overcast and chilly, but that did not prevent Whole Foods Market in Valencia from welcoming the warmer temperatures of summer with a Memorial Day barbecue Sunday. For two days the market broke out its grills during their Kickoff to Summer Memorial Weekend Barbecue in the parking lot in front of the store, as a steady stream of patrons visited the makeshift outdoor patio to enjoy free hot dogs and hamburgers.
