U.S. Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon visited a Valencia retirement community Monday afternoon to honor the nearly 40 veterans who live there. The Memorial Day ceremony took place in the grassy courtyard behind the Belcaro recreation center, the Grove House, with veterans seated in three rows and other residents and guests scattered around them at tables.
Thomas Finley Mitchell came to California from Texas, and in 1860 he became the first United States citizen to reside in Soledad Canyon, where he started a cattle ranch and also farmed and raised honey bees. The only occupants of the canyon prior to Mitchell's arrival had been Native Americans, grizzly bears, coyotes and jackrabbits.

A 14-year old boy was struck by a motorist Monday afternoon while riding his bike near the intersection of Sierra Highway and Sandy Drive in Canyon Country. According to Officer Robert Tomayo of the California Highway Patrol, the boy was on the sidewalk but then suddenly veered out into the street in front of an oncoming pickup truck, which was not able to stop in time to avoid hitting him.

Commercial and residential trash rates may go up nearly 4 percent in July if the City Council approves an amendment to the franchises for the two local trash haulers. With council approval, the companies would be able to raise their rates up to 3.95 percent for one year beginning July 1.
Amid an ailing economy, the city's sales tax revenue dipped .6 percent in the last three months of 2007 compared to the same time period in 2006, according to data released by the city on Friday.
