FCOC hosts art festivals

The College of the Canyons Fine and Performing Arts division will host its 2009 "ARTstART Festival" on Friday, May 15 to Sunday, May 17 at the Valencia campus. The festival will celebrate the aesthetic achievements of its students and COC's artistic offerings and facilities.

Project Lifesaver hits SCV

Local families will soon be able to take part in Project Lifesaver, a program designed to keep children with special needs and patients with dementia from wandering and becoming lost.

"Project Lifesaver is a nation-wide program and it really was a program that started to help families find their children or loved ones if they were to wander off," said Kevin Tonoian, the city's technology services manager.

Kids learn self-defense

Several children left Gavin Espinosa's ATA Martial Arts studio on Saturday feeling more empowered to flee an unknown stranger should one ever approach them.

"I learned all about how to become really safe and to know the difference between good and bad strangers," said 10-year-old Haley Lohrli, of Valencia. "I learned how to get away from people in a bad situation."

Students seek jobs, too

High-school students who are job-hunting this summer are finding the hunt isn't an easy one. One Valencia High School student who has been out looking said he's applied to "a million places" for a summer job.

While that was an exaggeration, Peter Stenquist wasn't embellishing when he expressed his disappointment over the matter.

Officials outline fire season safety measures

Santa Barbara's disastrous Jesusita Fire has sparked concerns in the Santa Clarita Valley about the return of fire season and the need to be prepared, a County fire spokesman said.

The Jesusita Fire destroyed or damaged 75 homes and burned 3,500 acres, forcing more than 20,000 people to be evacuated as of Friday. The newest wildfire to ravage California reignited the push for fire preparedness by Los Angeles County fire officials.

Man carrying gun arrested

Santa Clarita Valley sheriff's deputies arrested Edgar Zuniga, of Sylmar, early Saturday morning for carrying a concealed weapon and possessing drugs, Lt. Mark Hershey said. Zuniga, 29, was standing on a center divider on Bouquet Canyon Road around 3:30 a.m. while his Chevrolet car was stopped in the number two lane on Bouquet Canyon. Road. near Camargo Drive. When the deputy approached Zuniga, he noticed a white sock hanging from the suspect's pant pocket.
