Hart district ROP student wins two dental scholarships

This has been a good month for Melissa Rodriguez, a junior at Golden Valley High School who is enrolled in a dental assisting program through the William S. Hart Union High School District's Regional Occupational Program. Melissa received word that she will receive a $500 scholarship from the San Fernando Valley Dental Society, and a week later her table clinic at the California Dental Association Spring Scientific Session earned her yet another $250 scholarship and a $100 cash prize.

Power failure strikes Newhall

Nearly 24,000 homes and businesses near downtown Newhall suffered through a power outage when a substation failed just after 12 noon on Sunday, according to Southern California Edison. The affected area also included portions of the Summit in Valencia, Circle J Ranch and Stevenson Ranch.

Boy nearly drowns

A 2-year-old boy is being treated for injuries after he fell and nearly drowned in a pool at his Saugus home on Sunday afternoon. He was immediately transported to Central Park, where a county Fire Department helicopter airlifted him to Los Angeles Childrens Hospital for further treatment. Det. Valencia High hosts EcoFest

Issues such as global warming, hybrid vehicles and holistic foods are not just for adults to tackle. At Valencia High School, a group of students organized together to bring the Santa Clarita Valley the inaugural EcoFest 2008 on its central campus parkway on Sunday afternoon. Resourceful Riverhawks collect food for needy

Three-year-old girl drowns

A 3-year-old girl drowned about 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the community pool of the Rancho Tesoro clubhouse in the Tesoro del Valle development near Valencia, said Lt.
