Teachers, students, parents rally against state budget cuts
Parents and students joined teachers from six local school districts and College of the Canyons outside City Hall on Tuesday afternoon in response to a recent proposal by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to slash $4.8 billion in education funding statewide. The approximately 500 people who attended the after-school rally were concerned about the impact of the proposed cuts on local schools.
City OKs ethics code amid rancor
The Santa Clarita City Council adopted a code of ethics this week, but not without a nearly two-hour debate with members of the public about what a code of ethics is and whether the city really needs one.
Seniors to protest TCU closure
A group of senior citizens plan to rally outside of Santa Clarita City Hall at 5 p.m. tonight to protest the decision to close Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital's transitional care unit. Hospital officials announced last week that the hospital plans to convert the 27-bed skilled nursing unit to general surgical beds by June 5.
Council to consider adopting ethics code tonight
Santa Clarita city officials may soon have to abide by a city code of ethics, but the proposed code that will go before the council tonight is essentially the same as policies already in place. Revenues keep going up for Santa Clarita Water Company
The Santa Clarita Water Company opened up its wallet Monday night to reveal how much it collects from its more than 28,000 customers. The bottom line? The wallet is much fatter than it was five years ago, by at least 50 percent.
Another Hart employee put on administrative leave
For the second time in less than a month, an employee with the William S. Hart Union High School District has been put on administrative leave for alleged inappropriate contact with a student. In a news release issued by district spokeswoman Pat Willett, the district says it is "currently investigating allegations of inappropriate contact between an employee and a student. The staff member has been placed on administrative leave pending results of the investigation."
Hart district to lease portable buildings
Despite having around 56 extra portables of its own, most of which are stored on lots near the district office, the Hart district will shell out nearly $400,000 to lease 26 portable buildings for the modernization of Hart High School and Placerita and Sierra Vista junior highs. A school in her honor
When a drought dried up the well at pioneer Sulphur Springs School in Sand Canyon in 1931, Leona Cox came to the aid of students by hauling five-gallon cans of water to the school in her Overland touring car. At the time, Sulphur Springs School consisted of one room and had one teacher, Florence Mitchell. Cox also helped out by keeping the fires going in the winter months, caring for the grounds, and helping to discipline the boys and girls.
