Heads-Up for Heads Up

To The Editor:

As many of you are aware, on Feb. 16, the Jim Tindell Bowl-a-Thon for Heads Up was postponed. It was not a planned event and you could say that it was just rotten luck. The event was being hosted by the SCV-Newhall Optimist Club and there were over 80 people there ready to bowl.

Have Some Backbone

To The Editor:

It was amazing. At 6:30 on Tuesday morning, it was the sound of hysterical laughter as community members in Castaic read the Tuesday edition of the paper. The Hart School Board is going to do a survey to see if Castaic needs a new school or if another school might need a performing arts center.

Kids Need a Place to Skate

To The Editor:

I don't understand our city leaders and planning department. Why not build a new skate park before tearing down the old one? Our young people need a place to skateboard.

Boston's Talent Will Be Missed

To The Editor:

Apparently great writing talent and an incredibly subtle, witty sense of humor doesn't count at the "new" Signal. Who chased off Mr. Santa Clarita, John Boston? Was that a corporate smooth move or just one of those dumb things that big- city newspapers do when they don't know how to deal with a truly talented, award-winning member of the staff who helped build the newspaper to what it has become today?

McCain's Environmental Record

To The Editor:

I was appalled to lean that John McCain was the only senator who two weeks ago chose to skip a crucial vote on the future of clean energy in America - dooming the measure to fail by just a single vote.

Defeat of School Bond

To The Editor:

It has been awhile and we're still getting nasty letters and e-mails from the proponents of Measure V. They all seem to have the same theme: "You opponents of the school bond hate children, want them to go to shacks for schools, kick your dogs, etc." Or "Now that you've defeated the bond, what are you going to do for ME?"

Please Vet Stories

To The Editor:

Re: 'US Military Kills Iraqi Couple' (February 6, 2008): Why is The Signal so quick to indict our soldiers? Let's see the facts before you convict them of murder in a headline.

In Support of Farley

To The Editor:

The Santa Clarita City Council only chose and appointed pro-open space people to the open space oversight panel. What a surprise!

City of L.A. Right on Newhall Ranch

To The Editor:

Although I rarely agree with the position that the L.A. City Council takes on most issues, their stance on the Newhall Ranch project makes a lot of sense to me.

Missing John Boston

To The Editor:

How do you replace John Boston...They didn't make two of him! Santa Clarita has lost another piece of its individuality. We miss you John, and the fun you brought to all of us for all these years. The Signal is left with a huge hole and no one to fill it!

Fibromyalgia Is Real

To The Editor:

Your Op Ed "The Controversy over Fibromyalgia" (Campos, Jan. 28, 2008) was very disconcerting. I've heard from many members of our local fibro support group and the comments were varied - disbelief, discouragement, anger.

April 26, 2008 | Karen Jeffries Co-Leader, Santa Clarita Valley Fibromyalgia Support Group | Letters to the Editor

Unadulterated Drivel

To The Editor:

Unadulterated drivel. How else does one describe the commentary "Huckabee Remarks Deserve Attention" by John Crisp (Feb. 21, 2008)? I am not sure what Mr. Crisp does in the English department at Del Mar College, but I certainly hope he is there as a student.

Kudos to Dianne

To The Editor:

I was compelled to write after reading Dianne Erskine-Hellrigel's commentary in Thursday's Signal ("Quit Trashing Santa Clarita," Feb. 14, 2008). I want to reiterate her strong words and encourage everyone living in this still-beautiful valley to do what they can to help - whether it be picking up trash on our many trails and in our neighborhoods, or reporting illegal dumping and littering.

Talk of 'Change' is Cheap

To The Editor:

At the risk of sounding either not fully informed or just scared about how the media is depicting the voters, especially Clinton vs. Obama, I bring this to the table: Both proclaim "change" and "hope." Not all change is good, and it can be frustrating to continue hoping for the many kinds of change each American wants. No government can please everyone, but even in the name of "the kids" or "the next generation" we must try to discern what is intended to be changed - and how much it will cost us.

Goodbye, John Boston

To The Editor:

It really is sad to hear that one of the best darn story writers has left. I will certainly miss the "Time Ranger" and a lot of other readers will miss him as well. He has really kept the community in the know of the history of the SCV. My wife and I have always looked forward to his weekly columns and stories. JOHN, please reconsider. There is that gift of balance you have in making people smile and laugh when reading our local news.

City, take a stand against petition blockers

I know there are quite a few people in the SCV who can remember back to the '40s, '50s and '60s during the big strikes that some of the big companies had - and how violent they were.

‘Rent’ provides chance to learn of silent killer

As the College of the Canyons Theatre Department performs "Rent" at the Performing Arts Center on May 9, 10, 11, 16, and 17, it puts the spotlight on Marfan syndrome, which is believed to have caused the death of "Rent" playwright Jonathan Larson at the age of 35.

DUI checkpoint: There are more effective ways to catch drunks

Regarding Friday night's DUI checkpoint: Here we go again - another traffic checkpoint where a thousand or so drivers will be inconvenienced so one or two people can be cited for a DUI.

U.S. needs to maintain partnership with UN

A new poll released this week by the Better World Campaign has found that even during this polarizing political time, there is one issue that voters agree on: the U.S. can't go it alone to solve the world's problems.

Racism is just illogical

Aristotle, the ancient philosopher, is right on the money when he considers the nature of racism. A person's skin color is nothing but an accidental occurrence.
