On Nov. 10, I was honored to help prepare a traditional Marine Corps meal (SOS) for Marine veterans at the Los Angeles Fire Department Museum. The attendees are mostly active and retired police officers, firefighters and paramedics.
In our modern society, everyone knows. We all know the answers without a doubt. I've seen enough Christians blindly stand with Israel because that is what they are trained to do. No one is questioning their own convictions as good humans must. Why are we not philosophizing anymore; why is there no longer a greater importance on questioning our truths? We all have an answer; no one can admit they do not know. I do ...
Regarding your article "Cellphone abuse on road out of control," you write that law enforcement should also emphasize avoiding other in-car distractions – eating, applying makeup, fiddling with the radio, focusing on other people or pets in the car, etc.
Off of politics for awhile, let's deal with a very important matter - the UCLA vs. USC football game on last Saturday at the Rose Bowl.
As American-Muslims, Thanksgiving holds a special meaning for us. The Holy Prophet of Islam laid strong emphasis on the practice of offering thanks and the quality of gratefulness, not just to God but also to fellow human beings.
Pondering the results of the recent local and national elections brings to mind a Benjamin Franklin quote:
On page A5 of the Nov. 14 edition of The Signal is the continuation thread of a front-page article about a young woman killed in a car crash on McBean Parkway.
In response to "Some compromise could head off looming cliff," Nov. 11: If President Obama did all the things Walt Watson feels will rescue America from financial Armageddon - he would be President Romney. But he ain't, and rescue is unlikely.
In trying to explain how school funding works, I chose a topic close to my heart: home economics. I like to eat, so much of my life revolves around cooking and eating.
In response to Richard Myers' letter of Nov. 11, I agree that the Letters to the Editor section is not the correct place for "paid" political endorsements. My letter from Nov. 2 was mentioned as an example, being dubbed a "paid candidate endorsement" letter.
Are we doing all we should for the people hit by (Superstorm) Sandy? I know the Red Cross and FEMA are there, but still I wonder.
Michael Reagan's syndicated article "GOP turns sure victory into defeat" (Nov. 8) misses the mark on so many fronts.
Just prior to the election, The Signal ran an article titled "Dem leads campaign spending" (Oct. 28). It said Democrat Fran Pavley had raised $1,907,404.59 but had already spent $2,126,773.52.
Happy for him but sad to hear that Robert Lamoureux is retiring. We looked forward to reading his column every Saturday. His thoroughness and expertise were always appreciated and will be missed. He is a treasure.
I was doing some pondering after hearing of the latest scandal coming out of Washington: the disgraceful behavior of the head of the Central Intelligence Agency.
I would like to respond to Kevin Buck's column "Jesus Would Be a Liberal Democrat" (March 20, 2013).
Can anyone explain to me why it takes a minimum of five sheriff's deputies to greet Lindsay Lohan at curbside and escort her to the courtroom?
Charlie Vignola takes a page from Stephanie Cutter's playbook in blaming Republicans for the bad health and eventual deaths of his parents.
Editor's note: On March 19, The Signal published a story about a woman whose wallet was stolen by someone hiding beneath the racks of a clothing store while another person distracted the victim. Following is an edited version of readers' postings on the online version of the story.
In response to the column "Jesus would be a liberal Democrat" (March 19), it's always easy to use, or misuse, Jesus to make a political point, although good taste dictates against it.
In Mr. Patton's piece "Red states should be careful what they wish for" (March 22), his conservative critique of liberalism is as fact-free and unsupported as nearly all conservative points seem to be today.
After a great many conversations and debates about gun control, there are still a great many members of Congress bowing to the NRA lobby because they want to protect their political futures more than they want to protect us against gun violence.
While driving in Santa Clarita I have noticed some techniques that appear to be unique to the culture here.
I used to live in Santa Clarita. I moved to the Bay Area about nine years ago but still check in on The Signal occasionally.
Compulsion against peaceful citizens is immoral. Likewise, extracting taxes for activities that benefit some citizens, but not others, is also immoral.
The tours of the White House have been canceled by the President. How dare he do such a thing?
There's talk I've heard that Ford, VW & other carmakers make engines for cars in Europe and other countries that make upwards of 60 mpg. They are however not allowed in the U.S. Imagine the benefit to students and low-income families if they were allowed here.
The Signal's Opinion Page of the March 14, 2013 issue shows forethought and good planning in printing two columns on the same subject but with the authors having completely different views on the matter. That subject is the recent 13-hour filibuster by Senator Rand Paul and the authors are SCV columnist Steve Lunetta and syndicated columnist Joe Gandelman; conservative and liberal respectively.
We use words and rhetoric to express ourselves, our opinion. But in today's politics, there's such a spin that you can no longer take words at face value.
