Kellar, Spierer best choices

After completing 31 years of service with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, I had the distinct pleasure of serving the Santa Clarita Valley in numerous capacities, including 20 years on the board of directors of numerous community service organizations. As a member of the City Formation Committee,

Money well spent

To The Editor:

In The Signal's March 22 article, "$380K Spent On Advice," it was pointed out that the Castaic Lake Water Agency "paid more for consultants in January than any other single expenditure outside of water received through the State Water Contract."

June 04, 2008 | By Brian J. Folsom, Engineering and Operations manager Castaic Lake Water Agency | Letters to the Editor

Animals as gifts are not a gimmick

Michael Picarella, by his own admission, overflows with imagination.

Thanks for the article on Moms in Touch

To the Editor:

I would like to thank you for Tammy Marashlian's March 15 insightful article about Moms in Touch in the Santa Clarita Valley. This prayer ministry, uniting moms in prayer for their children and their schools, is life-changing, both for our children and for us moms.

How NOT to campaign

To The Editor:

Attention, all those running for a seat on the City Council in the upcoming election: Any candidate who calls my phone with one of those intrusive, annoying, automatically-dialed, pre-recorded messages will NOT get my vote.

Ender cares

To The Editor:

I support Laurie Ender in her candidacy for City Council. Laurie would make a wonderful addition to the council. She is an intelligent, hard-working and enthusiastic advocate for the people of Santa Clarita and has already left her caring touch on the lives of so many.

In recent weeks, there has been a wealth of opinion regarding the candidates for the upcoming Santa Clarita City Council election. Many prominent figures from the community have lent their endorsement, and much has been offered in the defense of one candidate or another.

Kellar and Trautman

To The Editor:

Having been intensely involved in City Hall politics for the past two years, I have witnessed two candidates emerge as the top choices in next Tuesdayâ€TMs election: Bob Kellar and Diane Trautman.

Two endorsements

To The Editor:

Do you want City Council candidates who have serious conflicts of interest or who get money from dubious sources known to misrepresent opponents with hit mailers? Obviously not. You do want council members who work hard, are accessible, have strong experience, are competent, and most of all, have integrity.

Don't vote for Kellar

To The Editor:

To Bob Kellar: you want us to vote for you, but you can't follow the printed instructions! Oh, those instructions must be for everyone else, not you.

Trautman: Dedicated to SCV

To The Editor:

Although I live in the unincorporated county area of the valley and cannot cast my vote in the City of Santa Clarita elections, I believe that voting is an effective tool to effect change and have a voice. I urge all residents to take a few minutes out of their day to vote for their candidate of choice. I feel each of the candidates has strong traits, however, I'm compelled to express my personal involvement with Diane Trautman.

Why I'm for Ender

Bergdahl and Obama deserve the same cell

Regarding Bowe Bergdahl's release in exchange for five terrorists, when this soldier enlisted in the Army, he knew the challenges ahead of him in military life, and one of those challenges was the possibility of capture by the enemy.

The best for others, in 2 flavors

Let's stipulate that both sides of the political spectrum want the best for others (a fair assumption, especially since both sides insist that is so).

Pitch in and keep our valley beautiful

Recently on my daily walk with the dogs I really noticed how much trash is being discarded on our streets and in the gutters.

A salute to Maya Angelou

Perhaps the most difficult task to make a financial living at is that of being a poet. Yet, if one is great enough and has a measure of luck - like Maya Angelou - it is not impossible.

Concerning our local charter schools

Violence in America

Historically we are a violent people and mankind's history throughout the world demonstrates that we are violent. Laws passed protect us all from violence. But laws alone can't eliminate violence.

Look at Switzerland

In Charlie Vignola's column ("Sensible about gun control," May 20) Vignola is basically making the intellectually flaccid argument that guns cause their own misuse.

Cutting back on water use

A couple of years ago, when local officials said to cut down on the use of water, the wife and I bought a new dishwasher and a new washing machine that use less water.

Vilification of Sterling

I would be less troubled with the vilification of Donald Sterling if the popular press, including printed and electronic media, were as aggressive in the treatment of prominent blacks, including sports figures, when they make blatantly racist statements about whites.

Freedom of speech needs some curbs

Pastor Hegg's Sunday column "We don't have to think alike," is, as usual, rooted in fair-mindedness as he supports actions being legislated against, but not simply words.

Sliding down the slippery slope of speech sanctions

Pastor Hegg's column published in The Signal May 11, "We don't have to think alike," beautifully states my own concerns about the current situations when what people say is being used to destroy them financially and socially.
