Crime spiking near Highlands Elementary

Editor's note: The following letter was sent to The Signal and to Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar.

I would like to add my concerns to the growing list of homeowners who are greatly concerned with the drastic spike in criminal activity in the neighborhoods surrounding Highlands Elementary School.

Show no pity for those who gambled and lost

Why do we not hear about all of those who were speculators who purchased homes with the purpose of turning them around in two years to make a huge profit?

Kudos for preserving wilderness

As a long time resident of Santa Clarita, I was pleased to see that 13,700 acres of our local Magic Mountain and seven miles of wild and scenic Piru Creek were included in Congressman Buck McKeon's and Senator Barbara Boxer's wonderful bipartisan wilderness bill for the Eastern Sierra and Northern San Gabriel Mountains ("McKeon bill protects 42,000 acres," May 30, 2008).

Not that I wasn't also excited that this bill will protect more than 430,000 acres of pristine mountain ranges and ancient forests in the Eastern Sierra, as well as the Owens River Headwaters ...

United States must end reliance on gasoline

Lynne Plambeck, Tom Purcell and Buck McKeon have all sounded off about the rising cost of gasoline.

I've been studying this problem for many years, since it is obvious that oil is a finite resource. It's not going to last forever.

Excellent care at SC Convalescent Hospital

There is no need to travel to the (San Fernando) Valley for Transitional Care.

The staff at the Santa Clarita Convalescent Hospital are warm, loving and compassionate to their patients and visitors.

Thankful for wilderness protection

I am very thankful to Congressman Howard "Buck" McKeon for introducing a bill that will protect the most beautiful wild places and rivers in the Eastern Sierra and Santa Clarita. Hiking on our locals trails and enjoying the beautiful scenery around me has made a great impact and difference in my life.

Budget crunch being felt by communities

The governor's proposed cuts in the budget are downright appalling.

Bush’s ratings reflect our culture

President Bush's dismal approval rating is not so much a commentary on his job performance as it is an accurate commentary on our self-absorbed, spoiled society.

U.S. R&D off the track

With 50 years of experience in the research and development business, I have to disagree with Anne McFeatters' position that the decline in U.S. technological leadership is due to lack of government funding. Except in the military area, U.S. inventiveness has rarely been funded by the government. Think of Edison, Ford, the Wright Brothers and Silicon Valley.

Kudos to new sports editor

I complained mightily about The Signal's Sports pages before. So now I'd like to make amends.

A wish list for the Santa Clarita Valley

Caltrans needs to hire women to repair the potholes and cracks on the 5 freeway because the job the men have been doing is a joke!

Keep development on SCV's west side

I have been a resident of this valley for more than 32 years. We tried to develop the Rivendale/Towsley Canyon at that time, but regional planning - through the county - was less than eager to approve the development as the creek that runs through the canyon drains in excess of 4,000 acres.

We were there during an El Nino when the water that rushed through the creek was so strong that it carried heavy large boulders, storm drain pipes and other debris and deposited it on the flood plain - the Smiser Mule property.

How not to choose judges: Steve Lunetta’s method

Steve Lunetta wrote an Op-Ed article on June 2, 2008 on "How to Choose the Local Judges." In that article he states, "Please take the time to read and think about the judges you vote for."

SCV needs to give people reason to come here

More new hotels. Geez. They haven't even gotten around to putting mints on all the new pillows at the corner of the 5 and the 126. I was just wondering who's gonna stay in all these hotel rooms? Has Magic Mountain suddenly gained some new allure that I've missed? I doubt it.

There is no other reason to get off the freeway except to get gas.

Gay marriage ban a religious freedom issue

I'm one of the "million fools" that Jonathan Kraut wrote of (June 3) who signed the petition to amend our state constitution so as to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The main reason our constitution must be amended this way is to protect our freedom of religion, which is one of the basic rights supposedly granted by our constitution and the primary reason this country was founded in the first place.

A salute to Maya Angelou

Perhaps the most difficult task to make a financial living at is that of being a poet. Yet, if one is great enough and has a measure of luck - like Maya Angelou - it is not impossible.

Violence in America

Historically we are a violent people and mankind's history throughout the world demonstrates that we are violent. Laws passed protect us all from violence. But laws alone can't eliminate violence.

Look at Switzerland

In Charlie Vignola's column ("Sensible about gun control," May 20) Vignola is basically making the intellectually flaccid argument that guns cause their own misuse.

Cutting back on water use

A couple of years ago, when local officials said to cut down on the use of water, the wife and I bought a new dishwasher and a new washing machine that use less water.

May 15, 2014 | Carl A. Woerter Valencia | Letters to the Editor

Vilification of Sterling

I would be less troubled with the vilification of Donald Sterling if the popular press, including printed and electronic media, were as aggressive in the treatment of prominent blacks, including sports figures, when they make blatantly racist statements about whites.

Freedom of speech needs some curbs

Pastor Hegg's Sunday column "We don't have to think alike," is, as usual, rooted in fair-mindedness as he supports actions being legislated against, but not simply words.

May 14, 2014 | By Robert W. Burton Santa Clarita | Letters to the Editor

Sliding down the slippery slope of speech sanctions

Pastor Hegg's column published in The Signal May 11, "We don't have to think alike," beautifully states my own concerns about the current situations when what people say is being used to destroy them financially and socially.

Kudos to city for sponsoring Wings for Life World Run

In response to John Annoreno's letter to the editor "Wings for Life World Run disturbed the peace for 2 hours," published May 6, I participated in the Wings for Life World Run and I found it to be an incredibly inspirational experience.

Those disturbed by World Run can give up a little sleep and help out

In response to the letter to the editor "Wings for Life World Run disturbed the peace for 2 hours," published May 6, I urge John Annoreno to stop for a moment and think about the purpose of the Wings for Life World Run.

Regarding the May 5 column "The Sterling Dilemma" by Steve Lunetta, racism and bigotry in this country have been prevalent since the America's inception.
