GOP churches are not the only ones in politics

Paul Sibek finally speaks out about churches ("Churches and politics," Letters, Nov. 20), as he perceives, being involved too much in the political process.

Why I voted 'yes' on Proposition 8

I have read the editorials on yes versus no on Proposition 8 because marriage can only be defined by the creator of marriage - God. I voted yes on 8 because God said that marriage is between a man and a woman.

Oh, Gary Horton, please don't play God

Poor Gary, poor Gary (Horton, "Free at Last! At least for the majority," Local Opinion, Nov. 12).

Got government?

Congress authorizes $700 billion to save the mortgage meltdown but no one has a clue how to apply the funds.

Sarah Palin is an insult to the voters

Republican animosity to government regulation is long-standing. And yes, they emphasize property rights over notions of the commons and have often been comfortable sacrificing wildlife, air, and water quality in the pursuit of profits.

How does she know?

Thank you, Diana Sevanian, for your article in the opinion section on Sept. 7 regarding Sarah Palin.

A slap in the face

Southern California Edison's hypocrisy is now exposed. Very exposed. So much for their "Environmentally Conscious" advertising.

Say no to NAFTA

Karl Marx, the father of communism, stated in a speech given in Brussels, Belgium, on Jan. 8, 1848: "The (free trade) system is destructive. I will use the (free trade) system to break down nationalities in order to build my communist world."

What’s going on?

Who is responsible for copy editing at The Signal? I wonder this almost daily, most often when the copy is local, but sometimes even with copy from the wire services. Examples are voluminous, but a case in point: Did anyone there notice that "Doonesbury" was there in name only (no strip) in the Sept. 18 edition?

Discrimination is wrong

We people of faith can and do hold different opinions on issues. In regard to Proposition 8, I am puzzled that those who have known/experienced religious discrimination would choose to discriminate against gays and lesbians whose sexuality is NOT a choice.

Flipping the bird

I suggest to David Kirscher ('Flipping the bird' is protected expression, Letters, Nov. 11) that even though "flipping off" a group of political demonstrators may be protected as a form of "political speech," how about practicing common decency? Just because it is legal doesn't make it right.

Early voting blues

The public seems to have already forgotten that the election in Los Angeles County was a travesty for early voters.

Governor all wrong

Gov. Schwarzenegger seems to have it all wrong. Originally he said he believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman and he rejected legislation authorizing same-sex marriage (ref. Los Angeles Times, Nov. 10: "Schwarzenegger tells backers of gay marriage").

November 25, 2008 | By Ken Newitt Newhall | Letters to the Editor

Your God, my God

Dear John Graham Who Voted Yes on 8 (Letters, Nov. 13): You believe in the sanctity of marriage that is the design of God, our creator, and believe it should be between one man and one woman in a miraculous procreative purpose.

EEOC issues gay guide

I replaced the word "religion" or "religious" with "gay" or "gayness" in the following from EEOC. Interesting!

Bergdahl’s a deserter

In his column today (June 10) entitled "Charlie Vignola: G.O.P. smears P.O.W.", Vignola launches into his usual anti-conservative anti-GOP invective, this time over the Bergdahl affair. It's just more of Vignola's signature ranting.

Bergdahl and Obama deserve the same cell

Regarding Bowe Bergdahl's release in exchange for five terrorists, when this soldier enlisted in the Army, he knew the challenges ahead of him in military life, and one of those challenges was the possibility of capture by the enemy.

The best for others, in 2 flavors

Let's stipulate that both sides of the political spectrum want the best for others (a fair assumption, especially since both sides insist that is so).

A salute to Maya Angelou

Perhaps the most difficult task to make a financial living at is that of being a poet. Yet, if one is great enough and has a measure of luck - like Maya Angelou - it is not impossible.
