I'm amazed by liberal semantics

Interestingly, the lead article on Oct. 17 read "Baby killer gets 25 to life." Indeed, the mother was convicted of killing her baby shortly after birth and tossing the lifeless body into a trash bin.

Thanks, firefighters

I am writing about the fires we have seen throughout the Los Angeles area. The firefighters have done a terrific job of keeping the fire contained. We have a great fire department that reacts to any threat from fires very seriously. I can say that I feel safe with them doing their job.

Palin is wrong choice for vice president

John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin for the office of the vice president is disrespectful to the American people as well as the office itself.

Can’t America improve a bit?

In the Aug. 16 edition, Frank Arenson in a letter to the editor stated that Barack Obama told a 7-year-old girl he is running for President of the United States because "the country isn't very good."

Misleading real estate numbers

I am very disappointed by our local newspaper, The Signal, with regards to the article published today that reports the fact that local real estate sales are up 22 percent.

The financial lesson is up to you

Can any financial institution make loans or ridiculous offers without a willing purchaser? Second question: Would you invest in a financial institution that showed poor profitability or one that was booming and was very profitable?

Please upgrade the Valencia Library

I think that the Valencia Public Library should be redone. The library is a great place to get books, especially in the bad economic times we are having.

It's been a historic time at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Overspending, not Prop. 12, caused deficit

Democratic voice Cal Planakis predictably attempts to hide the real reason for California's current $15 billion deficit by blaming it on Proposition 13. The bright lights of actual budget numbers reveal the real culprits.

He sure makes a darn good speech

Regarding Obama's speech at the consummation of the DNC, one commentator stated, "Vote for him or don't, but thank God that the United States of America can produce great speakers who can deliver great speeches."

City must maintain its park space standards

On July 15, I asked the city Planning Commission how the proposed new general plan being developed under the "One Valley, One Vision" will meet the city's existing park space requirement, which is five acres per 1,000 residents per the city of Santa Clarita General Plan dated 06/25/91.

What happened to fair and balanced news?

Would it have been too much trouble for Signal staff writer Brian Charles to contact Dr. Marc Winger of the Newhall School District to be able to present a balanced article regarding the "Gay couple living American dream" as reported in the Oct. 30 article?

America needs to change its energy policy

I don't know about you, but to me, reducing the threat of climate change would best be accomplished by having good flood control, stout construction, a reliable water supply and affordable energy - Not by following leaders who think we can reduce the threat of climate change by stopping the change.

Average Americans dress like bums

With perhaps the exception of church services (and even some of them need the following counsel), I have noticed that the average American - even at work - dresses like a bum, no pride in one's attire at all. Ragged blue jeans coupled with ragged tee-shirts dress most of our Santa Clarita residents, these days.

Skateboarder behaviors

How many more families are going to have their hearts broken by their young people going around with ear plugs on a skateboard or bicycle and not paying attention to the traffic lights at an intersection?

Kudos to Newhall Tennis Club members featured in Signal’s Our Community

While scanning the SCV Signal on Sunday morning, Jan. 19, on my computer I decided to click onto the Our Community section. I had exhausted my resources with LTEs, columnists, Signal editorials, business news,

Promote self-sufficiency and strong marriages

Fifty years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson delivered his famous "War on Poverty" speech, purposing "to cure it and, above all, to prevent it." Unfortunately, like our other wars in the last half-century, this one has not lived up to its noble ideals.
