Henry Mayo’s services must be expanded

Mary Ann and I have lived in this valley for more than 40 years and in the last 10 years have relied heavily on Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital for our health services. It is not an overstatement that our hospital saved my life at least once and arguably twice.

Hospital expansion must fit Valencia dream

The issue of the expansion of the Henry Mayo (Newhall Memorial) Hospital campus and its "master plan" will soon be presented for City Council approval. There are serious questions as to the impartiality of certain council members with regard to this action. I have always believed in the integrity of the individuals that are elected to represent the best interests of their constituents, but I recognize that often misinformation, misrepresentation and misguided values can also blind common sense.

Tired of the GOP Party

Reading Steve Lunetta's Uncle Earl column ("Uncle Earl's view on the election," Nov. 20) summed up what is wrong with the Republican Party: a loss of ideals, finger-pointing, idle gossip, fear-mongering and a considerable state of denial.

Bigger, faster, flashier

We have been brainwashed by the automobile industry in telling us that we have to have bigger, faster and flashier cars.

Do the math

What if you walked into a store to purchase something and you saw a sign over the item you want that read, "This item is marked UP 18 percent or 20 percent or 28 percent or more"?

Health insurance is so hard to find

Trying to obtain health insurance for a family is a joke! I recently quit my job with the county to take care of five teenagers and help my husband with his business.

I'm so glad John Boston's back

The Signal has taken a huge step forward by including the Sunday columns of John Boston. The first column (Nov. 16) had to do with politics (and I am so over politics now, right or left) and I couldn't really enjoy it.

Every day is Veterans Day for me

Veterans Day may already be over, but I think we should remember our veterans every day, not just Nov. 11.

America needs to change its energy policy

I don't know about you, but to me, reducing the threat of climate change would best be accomplished by having good flood control, stout construction, a reliable water supply and affordable energy - Not by following leaders who think we can reduce the threat of climate change by stopping the change.

Average Americans dress like bums

With perhaps the exception of church services (and even some of them need the following counsel), I have noticed that the average American - even at work - dresses like a bum, no pride in one's attire at all. Ragged blue jeans coupled with ragged tee-shirts dress most of our Santa Clarita residents, these days.

Promote self-sufficiency and strong marriages

Fifty years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson delivered his famous "War on Poverty" speech, purposing "to cure it and, above all, to prevent it." Unfortunately, like our other wars in the last half-century, this one has not lived up to its noble ideals.
