Local cat veterinarian a hero

Not very often are do we acknowledge heroes. Tracy McFarland is one in my book. You see, on July 15, my cat of 12 years passed away. His name was Murphy. This letter is not only to help in the healing process after losing Murphy, but to say thank you to this wonderful doctor and her staff at "The Cat Doctor." Every now and then I believe God puts people in our lives for a ...

Iraqis banned from competition! A conspiracy?

Just read a teeny, tiny, one-sentence announcement: Five Iraqi athletes have been banned from Olympics competition.

Democrats play politics on oil drilling

I e-mailed this letter to Senators Boxer and Feinstein. I also sent it to the Governor. The "political football" of drilling for oil wherever it is in the United States is a typical example of the cynicism of the left.

Don’t punish the children for Sacramento’s budget

I am writing in response to The Signal's July 11 story "County Frets Over Foster Freeze." California's foster children did not create our state's budget crisis and should not carry the burden of the failings of their elders. Balancing the budget on the backs of abused and neglected children flies in the face of our commitment to provide quality care for our state's most vulnerable citizens.

Gay marriage threatens society’s foundation

I am responding to Don Gately's letter of July 17. Our society was founded on traditional values. Those values are a foundation that holds us together.

Choose to limit your consumption

Do I believe that government should impose restrictions on SUV owners for contributing to the oil scarcity problem by driving their gas-guzzling Leviathans? By all means, no.

Another urban center not needed in Santa Clarita

Being a resident directly next door to the Smiser Mule Ranch parcel, it grieves me that the city would even consider this an eligible site for an "urban center." In other words, another shopping center.

Cronyism apparently rife in local government

I am writing regarding the appointment of Frank Ferry's secretary to the parks commission. The only information we have been given regarding her abilities and background in parks and recreation is that she has been Mr. Ferry's secretary for the past number of years and seems to be good at that job.

A more holistic growth

I am writing this letter to show support for the master-planned expansion project at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. I side with the overwhelming majority of community leaders who support this project. I have lived in this community for over 22 years. I have seen growth that has made Santa Clarita a very popular and desirable place to live and raise a family. I have raised four children here myself and have enjoyed ...

Party or country?

What has happened to our government? If I remember correctly, we are supposed to be for and by the people, not for the person who can raise the most money and make empty promises.

Budget affects Democrats and Republicans

I am writing to comment on Stephen Winkler's July 3 submission entitled "Budget Cuts" and the subsequent online response from a reader who dismissed Mr. Winkler's assessment that budget cuts are not a partisan or ideological issue because they impact all Californians, including our seniors and children.

GOP, think about the jobs

Here is what gets me: The Republicans are always asking, where are the jobs? Well as of March 1, 2013, they are going to let thousands of people get laid off.

Fleeing business is big problem for California

Regarding Alice Khosravy's column "California is at bottom for business," (Feb. 22), Khosravy's excellent commentary was so clear and so factual citing a huge - if not t-h-e huge - problem that is at the core of California being on life support as a state, a once-thriving, enviable state.
