Measure SA is worth your five dollars

I support Measure SA and would like to see Sierra Vista Junior High School updated. I am a former teacher who sent my sixth-grade students to Sierra Vista in 1966. The school is old and needs modernization. I would also like to see Castaic have its own high school for the students to attend near their own homes, thus relieving Santa Clarita high schools of overcrowding. It's well worth the extra $5 per $100,000 of ...

Criticizing Obama doesn't make me racist

Why is it that any criticism of Sen. Obama and his associations with terrorists and racists, and his lack of experience always elicits cries of racism from the Democrat camp, including the mainstream media?

Amazed at response to menorah article

I am writing in response the Dec. 11 article "Kosher." In response to the incredible events that have occurred regarding the Stevenson Ranch Homeowners Association menorah, I am personally amazed at the HOA's handling of this issue.

Obama and the Governor of Illinois

I hope the flaming liberals are still happy with the new president-elect. Not too many in this valley, though - flaming liberals, that is.

I doth protest the hospital plans

Dr. Barstis of Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, could you please tell me where you live so that I can locate a small community hospital in your neighborhood, buy it, pay off the local planning officials to throw out the existing master plan for your neighborhood, and proceed to build another UCLA mega-medical center on your block?

School starts too early in Valencia

Does school start too early? I go Valencia High School, and our school starts at 8 a.m. This is too early in the morning. We students have to wake up early in the morning to get ready for school, and we don't get enough sleep. School lets out at 3 p.m. for most students. This gives the students about seven hours to get all their homework done, eat dinner, go to any extra-curricular activities, and ...

Remembering the Great Depression

Our United States is beginning another financial crisis. I remember the financial crisis of 1929. I was born in 1916, which made me a teenager when Wall Street crashed. We heard about men jumping to their deaths from skyscrapers because they couldn't face the results of their financial ruin. No one took such a violent out in our little town of Crawford, Nebraska, but men were found standing on the street or leaning against buildings with defeated, sad faces.

Professional arrogance is not a good quality

I write this letter in response to Dr. Barstis' reference in his letter to The Signal (Oct. 13) to those of us who are requesting a smart and honest hospital expansion plan - versus the current proposed plan which is laden with questionable motives, continued dishonest representation, and little in the way of actual hospital expansion - as "quacks."

Should we trust the Hart District?

The Signal's Oct. 12 editorial gave an overview of the lack of financial/spending controls of the William S. Hart Union High School District but concluded local taxpayers should vote for another $300 million bond, Measure SA, anyway. Previous bond construction cost overruns are at least $43 million, with a recently stated figure of $80 million. That is all taxpayer money (Measure V). Hart's superintendent asserts measures exist to preclude such from reccurring, but we have ...

Should’ve stuffed it in the mattress

If the U.S. government has to bail out all the banks and lending companies with taxpayers' money, then I think they should have to feel part of the pain by losing a part of their overpaid salaries and all of the perks.

Jackson would give Dems majority in Senate

They say that insanity is defined by doing the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result. If this is true, why would we send another tax-and-spend liberal to Sacramento? Hannah-Beth Jackson has a long record of increasing taxes and growing government. If she were to become our next state senator, Democrats would essentially hold a two-thirds majority in the senate, thereby eliminating the need to negotiate on how much of our ...

Fleeing business is big problem for California

Regarding Alice Khosravy's column "California is at bottom for business," (Feb. 22), Khosravy's excellent commentary was so clear and so factual citing a huge - if not t-h-e huge - problem that is at the core of California being on life support as a state, a once-thriving, enviable state.
