MRF needs support

To the Editor:

I appreciate Kathy Thompson pointing out my misstatement concerning the zoning of the proposed Materials Recovery Facility site on Sierra Highway. ("MRF Zoning Contradiction," March 1, 2008.) Current zoning on 42.46 acres of the site is indeed zoned Business Park, not Industrial as I had stated.

To the Editor:

It is not often that our law enforcement officials are recognized for their hard work and professionalism. For this reason, I felt compelled to write this letter of appreciation.

Real-estate agents need not apply

To the Editor:

A note to all real-estate professionals who are aspiring to public office: think again. The California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) investigation against Santa Clarita City Councilman Bob Kellar is a stark reminder of government's intrusions into the private affairs of those seeking elected office.

Unpatriotic questioner?

To The Editor:

I have never run for office, nor do I intend to do so. And now that I hear once you declare your intention to run you give up your right to question those in office, well, I'm sure happy I haven't.

A Deaf Ear on Iraq

To The Editor:

As preparation for the war in Iraq, our president and his advisers asked our generals for recommendations on this matter. They advised that they needed more troops than Rumsfeld had suggested. They said winning the war was no problem. More troops were needed to win the peace and secure that nation's stability and recovery.

To The Editor:

Regarding Howard Barr's letter of Feb. 28, mentioning my name ('Troops in Iraq for the Wrong Reasons'), which was a reaction to a previous letter I wrote that was published on Feb. 24, ('Please Vet Stories'):

Money Wasted on Name Change

To The Editor:

I totally agree with Debbie Johnson's letter ('A Waste of $20,000, Feb. 20) that it is "an absolute waste of time and taxpayers' money to change the names of existing streets in downtown Newhall."

In Defense of Electoral Reform

To The Editor:

Democrats worried that Ralph Nader's presidential race might tip the scale in a crucial state over to the Republican nominee come November should embrace the opportunity before them to stop it before it happens: Not by tossing epithets at Nader or preventing his candidacy, but by immediately engaging in a program of electoral reform in key states to prevent such a possibility.

There's nothing wrong with Mr. Lunetta questioning and challenging the assertions of the REMI report that a revenue-neutral carbon fee would have positive economic benefits as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions (June 26, "The carbon tax has flaws").
