Where I choose to spend my money in Santa Clarita is a big deal to me. With so many places to shop, eat and use services in the SCV, I can go to about 100 different places for the same thing. This letter may seem like more of a rant, but I would also like to provide information to readers.
Merchants are not allowed to charge you an extra fee, service charge or set a minimum amount for purchases with credit cards. I find more and more businesses doing this, which specifically goes against Visa and MasterCard merchant agreements.
Although I've contacted The Signal several times regarding misinformation that was printed about my son, the mistakes continue.
I read Sharon Cotal's article in The Signal on Memorial Day ("Sorry, this school is in a no-hugging zone," May 26) and the more I read it, the more exasperated I became!
I know the verdict is not in yet for Pinetree Elementary School, but it is totally absurd that an elementary school principal would even think young children should not be allowed to "hug, high-five, shake hands or just be close" to their classmates.
I just wanted to comment on the Kierkegaard quote run in "The Still Small Editorial" on May 16: "To dare is to lose one's footing momentarily; to not dare is to lose one's self entirely."
I was hoping to put the quote within the context from which the author spoke. Though our current culture of thought probably interprets the above quote as taking a worldly risk (like pursuing a business venture or perhaps leaving one's spouse to begin a new life), Kierkegaard was actually speaking of faith in the Triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Many thanks to some special people and businesses.
On May 21, Nora Ortiz and co-workers at the Hyatt Valencia hosted a group of special education students from Valencia High School on a tour and shared career information.
Buck McKeon may have some admirable qualities, but he was off base in blaming Democrats for gas prices.
Ted Kennedy has finally received his sentence for his part in the Chappaquiddick death of Mary Jo Kopechne.
One of the reasons Democrats are against Proposition 98 is because of the rent control elimination clause. They believe such laws prevent landlords from price gouging.
What is the real impact of rent control? All it takes is simple applied economic principles from Econ 101.
This is my favorite time of the year. Every tree bursts forth with new foliage that ranges from blossoms to colorful new growth. All around our homes, paseos, city-landscaped roads, there are bushes, groundcovers, flowers, vines, all eagerly competing with each other in sheer beauty.
I recently read the (syndicated) column written by Tom Purcell, "Don't take your mother for granted," and I loved it. I am blessed to have one of the most amazing moms on the planet. I was raised to be confident and believe in myself. I was taught that I can do anything, I just have to try. My mom made sure that my brother and I always came before her.
In response to the article "Same-Sex Ruling Stirs SCV" (May 16, 2008), by Parimal M. Rohit and Katherine Geyer, I begin with one simple question to the readers of this newspaper: When so many Christian leaders assert that "marriage has been a union between a man and a woman since time immemorial," what Bible are they reading that has no mention of the many Hebrews who had multiple wives and concubines on the side?
In the quiet moments of the pre-dawn hour on a recent Saturday morning (April 26), coyotes entered my yard and took the life of my beloved dachshund.
I was not able to attend the meeting regarding the closing of the Transitional Care Unit at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. However, I did watch the "show" on television. I would love to have been there to voice my opinion.
Regarding Karen Kaplan's letter of May 26, "Lousy films in the SCV," I've been writing letters on this subject for a couple of years.
I totally agree with Karen Kaplan's letter to the editor, published May 26 and titled "Lousy films in the SCV."
Regarding The Signal editorial "Cooperation needed during water crisis" published in the Aug. 3 issue of the paper: Where in this cooperation do the state, county and city responsibilities come into play?
Recently a mob in Pakistan burned down eight Ahmadi Muslim homes, which resulted in the deaths of three children and a 55-year old grandmother.
Regarding the Michael Reagan column "Hollywood liberals are standing down for Israel" published Aug. 4 in The Signal: My thoughts exactly!
An article in The Signal July 3, 2014, quoted the proposed ballot language for the billboard referendum on November's ballot: "Shall Ordinance No. 14-02 adopting a Development Agreement with Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) for the removal of 62 advertisement structures, within the city, by Metro or any other means, and construction and operation of three digital billboards, adjacent to Interstate 5 and State Route 14 freeways, and the dedication to the city of revenue received from digital billboards, which creates an ongoing revenue stream, be adopted?"
Recently I was privileged to hear a presentation on the water crisis in our state, and also our problems here in Santa Clarita, regarding a shortage of water and an over-abundance of salt in our discharge into the Santa Clara River.
"Following the water rules" (Thursday's Signal) expresses a legitimate concern of SCV HOA residents - they are concerned about penalties for letting their lawns go brown as they cut back water use - landscaping accounts for some 60 percent of residential water use - because associations have rules about care and upkeep of homes, landscape and lawns.
Editor's note: About 50 percent of the water consumed in the Santa Clarita Valley comes from underground water sources.
The relatively small country of Italy (compared to the USA) has managed to take in more than 70,000 illegal immigrants (refugees) fleeing poverty, war and oppression in Northern Africa.
There is no doubt that the legalization of marijuana is gaining favor throughout the country, and I have to say that I am for it - but with some very strong reservations.
I have been agonizing over our water shortage issues for some time now, and am worried at the impact of having neighbor snitching against water using neighbors, and the hard feelings it may cause.
I am a new subscriber to The Signal. I missed your satirical editorial piece on July 13, which Michelle Boehm responded to in the July 20 issue of The Signal.
Another week, another opening of fine films.
There have been a great many suggestions about how this country should handle the crisis posed by the thousands of children invading our country.
