Missing John Boston

To The Editor:

How do you replace John Boston...They didn't make two of him! Santa Clarita has lost another piece of its individuality. We miss you John, and the fun you brought to all of us for all these years. The Signal is left with a huge hole and no one to fill it!

Fibromyalgia Is Real

To The Editor:

Your Op Ed "The Controversy over Fibromyalgia" (Campos, Jan. 28, 2008) was very disconcerting. I've heard from many members of our local fibro support group and the comments were varied - disbelief, discouragement, anger.

Unadulterated Drivel

To The Editor:

Unadulterated drivel. How else does one describe the commentary "Huckabee Remarks Deserve Attention" by John Crisp (Feb. 21, 2008)? I am not sure what Mr. Crisp does in the English department at Del Mar College, but I certainly hope he is there as a student.

Kudos to Dianne

To The Editor:

I was compelled to write after reading Dianne Erskine-Hellrigel's commentary in Thursday's Signal ("Quit Trashing Santa Clarita," Feb. 14, 2008). I want to reiterate her strong words and encourage everyone living in this still-beautiful valley to do what they can to help - whether it be picking up trash on our many trails and in our neighborhoods, or reporting illegal dumping and littering.

Talk of 'Change' is Cheap

To The Editor:

At the risk of sounding either not fully informed or just scared about how the media is depicting the voters, especially Clinton vs. Obama, I bring this to the table: Both proclaim "change" and "hope." Not all change is good, and it can be frustrating to continue hoping for the many kinds of change each American wants. No government can please everyone, but even in the name of "the kids" or "the next generation" we must try to discern what is intended to be changed - and how much it will cost us.

Goodbye, John Boston

To The Editor:

It really is sad to hear that one of the best darn story writers has left. I will certainly miss the "Time Ranger" and a lot of other readers will miss him as well. He has really kept the community in the know of the history of the SCV. My wife and I have always looked forward to his weekly columns and stories. JOHN, please reconsider. There is that gift of balance you have in making people smile and laugh when reading our local news.

Take your Bike to the Amgen Race

The front page newspaper story on "How to Get Around during the Amgen Tour" made no mention of the best way to get around ... on your bike!

Save Newhall Hardware

To The Editor:

WHAT? Newhall Hardware is closing? THAT CAN'T BE. It's been a landmark in the local community for 60 years. It's always been the place where you could get advice from knowledgeable people and find almost anything.

What's Really Frightening

To The Editor:

Regarding Ann Pfeifer's letter (Feb. 18, 2008): Thank you, Ann, for being the community gatekeeper for public virtue. I suppose next week you will tell us what books we should burn. Quite frankly, your suggestion that I contact CBS and complain about a show I haven't seen, based on your opinion, or the opinion of some Web site, concerns me just a little more than the content of "Dexter." Even Dexter deserves a trial by the jury of public opinion. In reality, Ann, people with your thought process frighten me more than "Dexter."

Alarcon Responds

I was stunned to read in Jim Holt's article (Feb. 19, 2008) that I endorsed the Las Lomas development. On the contrary, I have publicly opposed the project as it stands.

Shadowers Express Thanks

Thank you so much for your time and effort in this year's Groundhog Day National Job Shadow Day. Thanks to the help of all the businesses in Santa Clarita, over 200 students from different schools were allowed the chance for an in-depth look at careers that interest them. Doing this for our students is a positive thing that gets our young kids excited about working after school. It is truly amazing that a community could work together to make this event possible.

Cut the Rhetoric About Schools

To The Editor:

Regarding Ed Nemechek's letter (Feb. 7, 2008): Mr. Nemechek, perhaps coming from a tiny town deep in the Mojave Desert, known for a 1992 earthquake, a large rock, and as a gathering place for UFO believers in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s has tainted your perspective.

A Change for the Better

To The Editor:

I wish to thank you so much for 'fixing' The Signal. I thank you especially for 'fixing' the Escape section, which I used to so enjoy, but which had become stupid, low-class and, well... disgusting. What's funny about making fun of people? Or showing faces of movie stars while talking about important locals, or what's going on in town? Doing things upside down, inverting photos, etc., strange (made up) quotes and tasteless or just non-funny jokes. It seemed like a fake, silly newspaper one of my sons and his buddies would create for fun, at ...

'Shoe'-less Signal

I read the comic strips in three newspapers daily. I think the most consistently witty, clever, intelligent one is "Shoe." Please bring it back.

A Waste of $20,000

To The Editor:

What a absolute waste of time and taxpayers money to change the names of existing streets in downtown Newhall. What is the purpose of doing that? As if it is not enough to go through the parking change in downtown Newhall, only to change it back. Do you think that maybe Newhall Hardware is closing and the other businesses are affected financially is because of these changes? And now $20,000.00 will go to the "name change project"?

Editor's note: About 50 percent of the water consumed in the Santa Clarita Valley comes from underground water sources.

Treat refugees with compassion

The relatively small country of Italy (compared to the USA) has managed to take in more than 70,000 illegal immigrants (refugees) fleeing poverty, war and oppression in Northern Africa.

Legalize marijuana — but with restrictions

There is no doubt that the legalization of marijuana is gaining favor throughout the country, and I have to say that I am for it - but with some very strong reservations.

Let’s derail the train and desalinate ocean water

I have been agonizing over our water shortage issues for some time now, and am worried at the impact of having neighbor snitching against water using neighbors, and the hard feelings it may cause.

Base Hart districts on the high schools

In my humble opinion, the most straightforward, simplest answer to the William S. Hart Union High School District going to board member representation by areas/districts would be to add two board positions.

Let’s use our solar energy for our water

It seems incomprehensible that with the great shortage of water for this state, trillions of gallons of water lie off the cost and remains unused by those affected most.

Snake alert

Recently, I was driving in my neighborhood when something caught my eye crossing the street in front of me. A very large gopher snake was booking it across the hot asphalt from left to right.

We deserve better

John Boehner is the Speaker of the House of Representatives. He leads the House of Representatives as majority leader. Senator Mitch McConnell is the minority leader of the Senate. He's been attacking the President for the last six years unsuccessfully!

Let's be civil

I agree with Gary Horton (Opinion, July 9). It seems though that our country is less civil. If I speak of our President, I will state "our President" or "Mr. Barack Obama."

Since this is the time when a great many Santa Clarita families will be hitting the road on vacation, I thought I should share my recent experience with readers.

City needs to say ‘yes’ to sick pay for part-time employees

The Signal reported on July 10 ("Bill would mandate sick pay for part-time employees") that the City Council voted to oppose Assembly Bill 1522 as the "...estimated financial impact to the city as a result of the bill could be as high as $180,000 per year."
