It's a sobering fact. Santa Clarita has seen a 39 percent increase in motorcycle-related accidents since 2007, with five incidents resulting in fatalities. Motorcyclists are 26 times more likely to die in a traffic collision than someone riding in a passenger car.
John Muir once said, "When one tugs at a single thing in nature he finds it attached to the rest of the world."
Voters overwhelming voted down Proposition 1A on the May 19 Special Election which would have extended the crippling $16 billion tax increases on all Californians.
I have some favorite icons that I tie up with America and Americans. One is Grant Wood's "A Man, a Woman and a Pitchfork" painting; another is of the Lincoln Memorial; another is Martin Luther King delivering his landmark "I have a dream ..." address; the American soldiers raising the flag at Iwo Jima; my father in his World War I Army uniform; an old sepia print of Susan B. Anthony. These images make me ...
Editor's note: The following column was submitted as a response to Sen. George Runner's May 17 column about water softeners and Measure S. The directors and staff of the Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District share Sen. George Runner's frustration with the significant rate increase currently proposed for wastewater service in the Santa Clarita Valley over the next three years, with estimated increases four years beyond, primarily to comply with chloride regulations imposed by the state ...
Editor's note: Below is an open letter from Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger proposing solutions to the state budget deficit. May 22, 2009
I never thought I could agree with Dave Bossert on the issue of annexation. It seemed a foundational argument that only one city should ever exist in the Santa Clarita Valley to preclude the insanity of the Palmdale-Lancaster-L.A. County three-way wars for such business crown jewels as a Wendy's restaurant. But with the latest action at City Council Chambers, one must wonder if elected officials went something we referred to in Iowa as "outhouse rat ...
There is much confusion out there regarding a state-mandated fee that our residents are being asked to pay.
For out-of-control government spending plans, one does not need to look as far as Sacramento. On Tuesday, Mayor Frank Ferry, City Councilwoman Laurene Weste and county Supervisor Don Knabe are slated to vote on the first part of the rate increases from the Sanitation District that are projected to total $600 per year for the average household by the year 2015. That is compared to the $180 a year that we currently pay. The projected ...
Now that California voters have handed Arnold Schwarzenegger and his cadre of special interests another resounding special-election defeat, proponents of public services, fiscal responsibility, child care and mental health programs are gearing up for the battle over the 2010 state budget.
Too bad no one wants to tell our community what is really going on. For the past 10 years, everyone has known that the effluent emitted by Santa Clarita's sanitation districts is too high in salt (chlorides).
Nearly three years ago, I wrote an opinion piece in these pages about the lack of technical merit in the Regional Water Quality Control Board's (RWQCB) decision to set new lower chloride limits.
I can't seem to face up to the facts I'm tense and nervous and I can't relax I can't sleep 'cause my bed's on fire Don't touch me I'm a real live wire - Talking Heads There's a new gadget out on the Internet. The AP developed an interactive "economic stress map" visually indicating the recessionary stress for every county in the Union. There's an awful lot of counties in our country - a giant ...
No matter how many times liberals try to tell us the Republicans are to blame for the financial mess we find ourselves in, the claim is false.
My wife always warns me not to write columns about God. Sorry, dear. As a member of the SCV Interfaith Council, active in our local political arena and offered a writing platform (thank you, Signal), I feel obliged to begin a discussion anytime religious and political considerations cross paths. The Santa Clarita City Council voted to add "In God We Trust" to council chambers and other buildings. The phrase could also find its way onto ...
At the ground level of ethics is the understanding that living ethically is honorable while unethical behavior is shameful. This fundamental recognition of shame and honor can be found in every society. Even the idea of guilt and innocence has ties to what that society considers right or wrong, honorable or shameful. When you transgress a societal law or moral standard the unavoidable consequence is supposed to be personal shame. And when a society reaches ...
Reasonable people compromise. Unreasonable people do not. Instead, they trample over those around them to selfishly get their way.
Recently the pharmaceutical giant Merck announced it will cut 8,500 jobs in an effort to remain competitive in a rapidly changing drug industry. Earlier this year, Merck announced plans to cut 7,500 jobs, bringing the total of workers let go to 16,000. In all, Merck intends to lay off one out of every five of its employees.
Editor's note: This student column was submitted as part of a group project to commemorate Day of the Girl in the Santa Clarita Valley on Friday. The students from Huckleberry Learning Center have requested a proclamation from the city, and their art work has been featured on the national DayoftheGirl.org website.
On Oct. 1, 2013, the Republican Party shut down the United States government. On Oct. 1, 2013, the Democratic Party expanded the availability of health insurance for millions of Americans.
A friend of mine was recently asked to address a group of business people on the theme of optimism. His very successful career in both the video game and television industries was often summarized in terms of his seemingly unconquerable optimism. He asked me what I thought about the subject and it got me thinking.
Just in time for Halloween, we have what we are told is a truly terrifying and dangerous situation on our hands. Ladies and gentlemen, I don't know if you have heard, but the federal government has shut down due to a disagreement among Washington legislators over spending - or, rather, not spending.
"Mommy, Joshua took my toy and he won't give it back!"
This summer, shortly after turning 53, I finally "upgraded" to bifocal eyeglasses, and I must admit that I am underwhelmed.
Are we a nation with a food shortage? No. Are we a nation with hungry people? Yes. Why? Good question.
Much has been written about the nation's aging infrastructure and what our elected officials should be doing, but the solution to one problem lies squarely with the consumer.
"Who needs religious freedom?" It's a necessary, if often unasked, question.
It's likely that the most difficult period you've experienced in your life has been the Great Recession of 2007–2009 and the grindingly slow "recovery" thereafter.
SANTA CLARITA - Now the third largest city in Los Angeles County, Santa Clarita is home to more than 203,000 residents, 6,000+ businesses, thousands of acres of open space, and more than 30 parks. As our city matures and evolves, the principle of community involvement that led to incorporation in 1987 remains at the heart of Santa Clarita's plans for the future of our great city.
A primary component of Obamacare is the funding of it. That is a mega-daunting task.
