Montgomery named top KC prospect

After just one full season, Hart High graduate Michael Montgomery has been rated by Baseball America as the Kansas City Royals' top prospect.

Montgomery, who is preparing to report for the Royals' minor league camp in Surprise, Ariz. on Feb. 26, said he won't let the honor get to his head.

Wizard pleads guilty to felony gun possession

WASHINGTON (AP) - Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas pleaded guilty Friday to carrying a pistol without a license in the District of Columbia, a felony conviction that could jeopardize his future in the NBA.

Arenas pleaded guilty to a single count of violating the city's strict gun laws as part of a plea bargain in D.C. Superior Court. He will remain free at least until his sentencing March 26.

Angels, Trojans broadcaster Rory Markas dies at 54

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Rory Markas, a play-by-play sportscaster who spent the past eight seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, has died. He was 54.

Markas was found dead at his home in Palmdale, Calif., on Monday and the cause of death was not immediately available, Angels spokesman Tim Mead said Tuesday. Markas had surgery for a blood clot on his brain in late 2008.

Local fighter dealt first loss

A controversial stoppage in the second round dealt 2000 Hart High graduate Said El Harrak his first professional loss Friday night in Hinckley, Minn. in a boxing match televised on Showtime.

After getting knocked down twice by undefeated Lanard Lane in the first round, El Harrak struggled to defend against the Houston-based fighter.

New sports franchise on its way
