US unable to overcome big innings

LOS ANGELES - Beaten-down, undermanned, gutsy, whatever you want to call Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, add one more term to it - done. Despite a late rally, the United States couldn't undo Japan's fourth-inning death knell and fell to the Japanese 9-4 in the WBC semifinals at Dodger Stadium Sunday night in front of 43,630.

Diary of a Champion: Tom Purtzer

I played well again today, but again it was mostly putting. I'm glad I finished on a good note, shooting 3-under. Three-under today was a good score and just being able to leave on a good note.

‘Classic’ has been an apt description

Today, the 2009 AT&T Champions Classic concludes with the third round.

Golf legend Gary Player lives on and on

Gary Player's not done. The legendary golfer, who many consider the greatest international golfer ever, finished a 15-minute conversation on Wednesday in a dining area at Valencia Country Club. Hands were already shook and goodbyes were given, but Player stood up, one knee on a chair, and looked at the trees just off the tee box on hole No. 1. "It's not a case of speaking your mind," Player resumes. "It's about being interested in ...

Lance rides through SCV: Still hopes of a future finish

He came. He rode. And he was gone. Just like that. Lance Armstrong, beginning on the edge, took off from the starting line of the Amgen Tour of California on Town Center Drive in Valencia Saturday, and that was the most that anybody saw of the cycling superstar. The last two years saw the Amgen Tour of California finish in Santa Clarita, which meant a couple of loops through the streets of the valley, the ...

The find

Tom Barber's goal is to spread Jesus' word. So he goes on foot and tries to spread that message. He encounters all kinds of people - the mildly interested, those who dismiss Jehovah's Witnesses and those who listen. Then there was the old man. Barber found the old man by going door to door on the outer edge of Canyon Country in 2006. Talk began about the Bible. It soon turned to baseball. And something ...
