Local AYSO team advances to finals
The Canyon Country U-12 girls soccer team became the first team at any level in the city's history to advance to the AYSO state finals by winning the 32 team, section 10 tournament in Bakersfield on Feb. 28 and March 1. The Highlighters earned the right to head to Davis with three other regional representatives for the final four on March 28.

Proctor takes first global steps
Fifteen year-old Santa Clarita United Blazers striker Courtney Proctor continued playing beyond her years last week, scoring a goal for the United States U-17 team versus Germany during an exhibition in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. "This is only the beginning for her," said United Blazers head coach Clint Greenwood. "The evaluations from her coaches were very positive."
Youth rugby builds steam
Youth rugby is no longer just a new fad in the Santa Clarita Valley. The U-10 Santa Clarita Tigers took second place in the seventh Annual Invitational Youth Rugby Tournament in Fullerton in late January, and the U-12 team grabbed third place out of 12 teams in its tourney.

Local youth hockey player heads north
A local Pee Wee Hockey player is set to head to one of the most prestigious tournaments in youth hockey. Kyle Esbin, a 12-year-old Stevenson Ranch resident and student at Rancho Pico Junior High, will join his fellow Anaheim Junior Ducks for a two-week excursion north of the border in the Quebec International Pee Wee Hockey Tournament, starting Feb. 11.
Skills beyond her years
Courtney Proctor may only be 15 years old, but she already looks to be headed for success on the national level. The Santa Clarita United Blazers forward is going to Florida on Wednesday to train for a week with the U.S. Women's National U-17 soccer team before taking on the German National Team for a pair of games on Feb. 4-5.
Dreams of team all but gone

Runners make their marks
After all of the hyperbole over the past few weeks, the conclusion of the 13th annual City of Santa Clarita Marathon was rather subdued, some may even say anti-climatic. The men's winner, Shane Logan of Pontiac, Michigan, led wire-to-wire, crossing the finish line at 2:37. while on the distaff side, Ventura's Mary Jones took the lead at Mile 8 and never looked back, breaking the tape at 3:08.

Former Hart swimmer Rachael Krager claimed first place in her debut college swim meet at Washington State University. Krager finished the 1650-freestyle at the Pacific Invitational with a time of 17:20.74.

The SoCal Stingers Fastpitch '94 Travel Softball Team went undefeated in the recent Triple Crown Sports 2008 Best of the West Tournament to become the 14 and Under Division Champions.
