Cougars rough up Raiders

It's difficult to say which was more dominant -- the offense or the defense -- as the unbeaten College of the Canyons football team thoroughly manhandled Moorpark College in a National Division, Northern Conference laugher.

COC, its engine kick-started by Hayo Carpenter's game-opening, 95-yard kickoff return, used the momentum of Fred Winborn's three first-quarter touchdowns and a smothering defensive effort to blow past the Raiders 48-3 Saturday night at Cougar Stadium.

Trojans hang a doughnut on ASU

At the beginning of the season, many people would have marked the Oct. 11 matchup between the University of Southern California and Arizona State University as a can't-miss game between two teams slated to make runs at the Pac-10 championship.

USC (4-1, 2-1 Pac-10), led by running back Joe McKnight's career best 143 yards and a dominating performance by the defense, easily took care of business Saturday afternoon shutting out the Sun Devils 28-0, dropping the once-swaggering team from Tempe to a 2-4 (1-2 Pac-10) record and continuing their fall from grace after four straight losses.

Tyler Vanderzee's 5-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Michael Edwards with 10 seconds left to play tilted a seesaw battle in the winning direction for Mt. San Antonio College in a battle for the ages against College of the Canyons in the Southern California Football Association Championship.

Mt. SAC place-kicker Jacob Harfman drove home the extra point to give the Mounties a one-point lead.

Big game to get to bigger game

In 2007, three points was all it took for the College of the Canyons to miss out on a chance to play for the Southern California championship.

COC lost to Bakersfield College in overtime 48-45, ending its postseason aspirations and the chance to compete for another state title.
