Canyon freshman takes league title from No. 1 senior

The Foothill League boys tennis finals were the perfect setting for the ascent of Canyon's Jason Ferlianto from unassuming freshman to one of the league's top players.

The Hart of local swim

The only thing slow about the Hart swimming team is its bus. Arriving forty-five minutes late to the Foothill League Finals because the bus carrying the team got into a minor fender bender couldn't prevent the Indians swimmers from having a speedy day once they hit the water. Afterall, their t-shirts read: "Excellence...it's in the water." Indeed, Hart was excellent in the pool, capturing the boys and girls Foothill League titles, the 21st and 26th, ...

Vikings earn late payback

Finally, the ball rolled Valencia's way. And even when it started to veer toward Hart, the Vikings made sure there would be no seventh inning heroics from the Indians. After losing to the Hart softball team in their first meeting in a dramatic seventh inning Indian comeback, Valencia (22-5, 7-1) bounced back and squeezed past Hart (20-4, 8-1) 2-1 Thursday afternoon at Newhall Park. "We finally got the breaks. Maybe they are going to go ...

Hart maintains its Foothill League

Hart High's baseball team defeated Canyon at Bud Murray field 10-2 on Wednesday. Indians starting pitcher Michael Montgomery, despite having what he called a "sporadic" game, allowed three hits, walked five, allowed one earned run and struck out 12. He struck out the side in the second inning with just nine pitches. "I wish I could do that every inning," Montgomery said. "That's what happens when you execute your pitches." The Indians broke the game ...

Familiarity awaits at the final

For the most part, the Foothill League Boys Tennis Preliminaries held serve. All four top seeds in singles advanced to today's semifinals and three of the four seeded teams advanced in doubles. There was one curveball, though, albeit a curveball that was widely expected. Valencia's Tyler Gottshall and Jack Zapala who played singles all season and would have most likely been seeded No. 1 and No. 2 in the singles draw, entered the tournament as ...

Swimmers set table

He may only be a freshman but Valencia swimmer Bob Hwang has some lofty aspirations. "I'm just planning on beating the records for our school," Hwang said matter of factly. At the Foothill League preliminaries Tuesday afternoon, Hwang wasn't too far off. In winning the 100-yard butterfly, he was one second off the Valencia record. He won the 200-yard freestyle as well, finishing in 1:45.86, topping his seed time of 1.46.30 and automatically qualifying him ...

Just enough stuff

Trevor Bauer isn't your typical No. 2 high school starter. Even on a day when he didn't have his best stuff, the junior threw a season high 108 pitches, struck out nine and earned his ninth win of the season in a 7-5 win over Saugus. An ace in his own right, Bauer plays the Robin role for Hart's baseball team because senior southpaw Michael Montgomery is a unique talent and Bauer has no qualms ...

The fight is still in the Wildcats

The West Ranch varsity baseball team defeated Canyon on Friday 7-0 on the Wildcats home field. Wildcats senior Charlie Gillies pitched a complete game shutout for the second game in a row. Gillies only allowed the Cowboys two hits and struck out four Canyon batters. "We wanted to come out and get the win," Gillies said. "I didn't have many strikeouts, but I was able to rely on my defense to back me up." Gillies ...
