Last week we focused on boys basketball in the first edition of around the divisions. This week, we take a look at girls basketball. But let's make some quick points on boys basketball.
The Santa Clarita Christian girls soccer team is having a milestone season - thanks in large part to Kayla Gale's milestone accomplishment. The junior striker surpassed the 50-goal mark for her career by scoring three goals in a victory over AGBU High School of Pasadena in mid-January. Gale currently sits with 59 career goals, and Santa Clarita Christian is 14-2-1 overall and a lock to finish with the first winning record in the program's history.
We still have two weeks left in the regular season, which means a lot could still happen in Foothill League sports. But two of the races should become clearer this Tuesday.
Hart basketball's Patrick Abbott had possibly one of the ugliest stat lines to ever come out of the Hart High gymnasium.
Call it a logjam. Tied for first place in the Foothill League, Saugus and Valencia girls soccer ended their game knotted at 0-0 Friday night at Dr. Paul A. Priesz Stadium. Coupled with Canyon's 4-0 win over West Ranch earlier in the afternoon, there is now a three-way tie atop the league standings, while Hart nips at everyone's heels. "It is unfortunate because we feel like we played really hard today," said Saugus head coach ...
During its run to a perfect first half, Saugus girls basketball built a reputation as a defensive powerhouse.
Both Saugus and Valencia's boys basketball teams entered Friday's contest at Saugus needing a win to get to .500 in Foothill League play.
With the Canyon boys basketball team down by two with 13 second left to go in the game, everyone in the Cowboys' gym knew where the ball was going. Sure enough, just like West Ranch had anticipated, the ball flew to the Cowboys' Mike Edwards, who was double-covered and forced into an off-balance miss from 3-point land with one second left and the Wildcats (14-8, 3-3) escaped with a 46-43 victory Friday night.
With the game seemingly in control, the West Ranch girls basketball team relaxed its suffocating defense for the last two minutes of the Friday night's game. That's when Canyon cut a 10-point deficit with 2:01 to go down to a one-point deficit with seven seconds left and the Cowboys having possession of the ball.
Ties have been a recurring part of the 2008-09 season for both the Valencia and Saugus boys soccer teams, and Friday was no different. The Centurions and the Vikings both picked up their fourth tie in Foothill League play when the clubs knotted 1-1 at Saugus.
In Jake Bernards, San Diego State sees untapped potential. That's why the school offered him a scholarship. The West Ranch senior quarterback accepted the scholarship offer from San Diego State Monday. Other schools were looking at him, including Washington and UC Davis, Bernards said, but he said San Diego State was the perfect fit. It wasn't so much Bernards' football numbers that the Aztecs were intrigued by as much as his size. The 6-foot-5-inch, 205-pound ...
Grant, Lee, MacArthur, Eisenhower, Patton and Molacek. It's a stretch right now, but Saugus High soccer player Jamie Molacek could join that group of United States Military Academy alumni. Only a junior, Molacek has verbally committed to West Point. Back in April at the National Cup in Lancaster, Molacek caught the eye of Army head girls soccer coach Stefanie Golan, who will be in her first year at the helm next season. Molacek remembers her ...
We've reached the midway point of Foothill League boys and girls soccer and boys and girls basketball.
Canyon girls soccer girls soccer put itself right back in title contention Tuesday night with its 3-1 win over Valencia at Harry Welch Stadium.
All this talk of rivalry, and no game to back it up. Until now. Amid head-splitting noise, back-and-forth scoring and a tight finish, Golden Valley boys basketball defeated West Ranch 70-66 at Golden Valley High Tuesday night to establish the rivalry. The schools are natural rivals. Both opened up in 2004. "Oh yeah, definitely," said Golden Valley guard Maverick Ahanmisi on the game marking the true start of the schools' tug-of-war. It was a 3-pointer ...
SIMI VALLEY - The Saugus Centurions football team was unable to overcome numerous penalties on Friday night at Simi Valley High School, falling 31-28 to a determined Pioneer squad.
LANCASTER - Valencia junior Jay Jay Wilson called this one his Hart game.
