A second career?

Aly Drake had no big plans for track and field. Her first love is soccer, and she earned a scholarship to the University of San Francisco after starring for Valencia High School the past four years. Track was just a means to stay in shape in the offseason. That all changed after this past weekend's CIF-Southern Section Division I championships at Cerritos College. Drake ran the 800-meter race in a school-record 2 minutes, 9.95 seconds ...

Lopes named Foothill League Player of the Year

There was no stopping Christian Lopes this season. The Valencia shortstop and leadoff hitter crushed 15 home runs, launched 28 extra-base hits and drove in 33 runs while scoring 39 himself. The 15 home runs are a Foothill League and Santa Clarita Valley record. Those numbers led the Vikings to a Foothill League championship, and Lopes' play led to his selection as the 2009 Foothill League Player of the Year by the coaches. Just a ...

Edison turns out ’Cats’ lights

You could feel the winds of change. With a comeback brewing in the fifth inning, the West Ranch baseball team jangled the fencing and roared in their home dugout Tuesday. Then Edison of Huntington Beach sophomore left-hander Henry Owens, rattled for a couple of batters, blew back and ended the Wildcats' hopes at West Ranch High. No title this season

Possibly the best run in Santa Clarita Valley softball history ended Tuesday in Riverside. Valencia, winners of the last two CIF-Southern Section Division I titles, lost 4-2 to Riverside Poly (23-8) in the second round of this year's Division I playoffs. "You never want it to end," said Vikings head coach Donna Lee. "We played the kind of softball we (usually) play, we beat them. You have to have that sense of urgency every inning." ...

Youth takes center stage

The level of the competition. The roar of the crowd. The enormity of the moment. The CIF-Southern Section Divisional championship track meet can be intimidating to any youngsters. Given the circumstances, the future faces of the Foothill League acquitted themselves nicely on Saturday. "This is a totally new experience," said Saugus distance runner Stephanie Bulder. "There is a lot of pressure to do as well as the girls have done, but I just go out ...

Success built on tradition

Just walk into Valencia High's gymnasium and take a look around. Six CIF-Southern Section Division championship banners hang from the ceiling - four are for boys volleyball (2003, 2004, 2006, 2008). League championships are displayed on the north wall. There are eight straight Foothill League titles, with a ninth yet to be posted, again, boys volleyball. The opposite wall honors male and female athletes of the year. Surrounding football player Shane Vereen's name (2007) are ...
