CIF releases basketball brackets

The 2009 CIF-Southern Section basketball playoff brackets were released Sunday, leaving the Foothill League boys field of teams smiling across the board.

All six schools made it into the boys playoffs, while Saugus, Valencia and West Ranch will represent the league on the girls' side.

Budget ax may swing at sports

The state budget crunch may mean individual schools have to pay for substitute teachers when coaches travel with their teams, missing a day of school, according to some reports Friday.

West Ranch is playoff bound

West Ranch closed the third quarter on a 7-0 run and fended off Golden Valley 50-38 Thursday on senior day.

The Wildcats also clinched third place in the Foothill League, guaranteeing them a spot in the CIF-Southern Section postseason for the first time ever.

Wildcats win to get in

One way or another, Foothill League boys soccer history was going to be made Thursday afternoon at West Ranch High.

As Golden Valley took on West Ranch on the last day of the regular season, the two teams were battling for the final playoff berth from the Foothill League with the winning team advancing to the postseason for the first time in either school's brief history.

No doubting

Saugus girls basketball needed a little help to earn its second outright Foothill League title in school history, but the Centurions' 50-36 home victory over Hart coupled with Canyon's one-point win against Valencia completed the team's regular season goal.

This also makes it back-to-back titles, as Saugus shared it last season with Hart.

Golden Valley: Alone on top

In one year, Golden Valley has gone from winless to peerless.

The Grizzlies outscored West Ranch 30-7 in the third quarter and emphatically wrapped up an outright Foothill League title with an 84-66 victory Thursday evening at West Ranch High School.

Hart boys basketball locked up second place in the Foothill League with a 74-55 win at Saugus Thursday.

Brad Wyche and Ben Kimble combined for 43 points to lead the Indians (19-8, 8-2) to the victory.

Valencia secures a postseason spot

Valencia boys basketball locked up the third spot in the Foothill League standings Thursday night at Canyon High, defeating the Cowboys 73-49 in the regular season finale.
