Heat, smoke stops opener

Fire Department officials called a halt to the Foothill League's first cross country meet of the season Thursday at Central Park after taking four runners to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital with symptoms related to heat exhaustion.

Five total patients, whose names were not disclosed, were assisted during and following the completion of the boys and girls freshman-sophomore races, said Station 111 fire Capt. John Mazzocco.

Another tough matchup

Saugus' football team is looking to rebound from a tough loss last week against Westlake, currently the No. 4-ranked team in the CIF-Southern Section Northern Division.

When the Centurions (1-1) face Newbury Park (2-0) tonight, which is the No. 5-ranked team in the same division, Saugus head coach Jason Bornn said one group in particular needs to step it up.
