Valencia repeats!

IRVINE - It was a familiar sight. And yet it was unfamiliar. The Valencia softball team held the CIF Southern Section Division I Softball Championship plaque for the second straight season. But many of the faces were different. Valencia was the underdog. The prognosticators, the polls, and the preseason opinions were wrong. The Vikings beat undefeated Simi Valley 3-0 in the final game on Saturday at Deanna Manning Stadium in Irvine becoming the first back ...

Not without some help

You haven't heard a lot about Lelani Bernardino. Deservedly so, you've heard a lot about two of her teammates, one past teammate - 2007 state player of the year Jordan Taylor, one current - 2008 state player of the year candidate Jessica Spigner. But Bernardino is symbolic of what Valencia softball has been in 2008. Like her team, the senior outfielder has flown under the radar - probably unjustly. Valencia, the defending national champions and ...

Kelley: The pride of the long distance runner

Hart's Jimmy Kelley has come a long way this season. The senior has advanced to the state finals in the 3200-meter event for the first time in his high school running career. As a matter of fact, Kelley had never advanced further than the CIF-Southern Section Division I prelims. Kelley qualified for the state finals on May 31 at the Masters Meet setting a mark of 9:12.80, the sixth best qualifying time in that event. ...

Spigner carries the day for Vikings

Jessica Spigner did it all. Literally. Valencia's senior pitcher hit two home runs, drove in three runs, and made the game saving play as the Vikings advanced to the CIF-Southern Section Division I Finals with a 3-2 win over Santiago Corona. "As she goes, we go," said Valencia coach Donna Lee. "She's our catalyst and she got us going from beginning to end." Spigner gave the Vikings an early cushion with a two run homer ...
