National parks plan 3 free summer weekends

WASHINGTON (AP) - The National Park Service will allow visitors free entry during three weekends this summer to encourage Americans to visit national parks such as the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Rocky Mountain National Park.

The fee waivers - one each month in June, July and August - will apply to all 391 national parks across the country, from Alaska to Florida.

UPDATED: Debris confirms crash of Air France jet in Atlantic

FERNANDO DE NORONHA, Brazil (AP) -- An airplane seat, a fuel slick and pieces of white debris scattered over three miles of open ocean marked the site in the mid-Atlantic on Tuesday where Air France Flight 447 plunged to its doom, Brazil's defense minister said.

Brazilian military pilots spotted the wreckage, sad reminders bobbing on waves, in the ocean 400 miles (640 kilometers) northeast of these islands off Brazil's coast. The plane carrying 228 people vanished Sunday about four hours into its flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.

Supervisors back in-home long-term care

LOS ANGELES COUNTY - To provide more freedom of choice for disabled individuals, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion by Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich supporting federal legislation that allows disabled people to choose home-based care as an alternative to nursing homes or institutions.

The Community Choice Act (H.R. 1670 and Senate Bill 683) would establish a nationwide standard of coverage under Medicaid or community-based attendant care for long-term care patients of all ages, and would make available enhanced federal matching funds for those states, such as California, that have already implemented this innovative approach to ...

Antonovich allocates $1 million to buy Elsmere Canyon acreage

LOS ANGELES COUNTY - To expand open space and recreational opportunities for the Santa Clarita Valley, Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich has committed $1 million from the Sunshine Canyon Landfill Benefit Trust Fund to help acquire an additional 800 acres of land at Elsmere Canyon.

"Acquiring the remaining privately-held acreage at Elsmere is critical to preserving wildlife movement corridors, and establishing a vital connection between the trail networks of the San Fernando Valley and the Santa Clarita Valley," Antonovich said.
